SIC X 14 and x 14 PRO
« on: December 25, 2013, 09:19:42 PM »
Recently read some threads and a Paddlebaord Specialists video reviews on the SIC X14 and X14 PRO.  Is the PRO in production/available yet?  If not, when?  Any ideas on price?  Does anyone have one yet?  Interested in any feedback on either board.  Thinking that the X 14 14 at 28.5  (29.5 ???) might be a tad wider than I would prefer.  26 inch wide PRO is more like it, if it is stable in cross wind/side chop.  I have a 14 X 26.12 Javelin and not a fan of that board in cross wind/side chop.  Love the narrowness and speed, just want more stability.

I have no idea about the sic boards, but am curious about your javelin. What feature of the board makes them so tippy in side chop? Is it just the 26 inch width, or is their more to it. I have only been doing this  a short while and a 14 foot race board is in my future. I have no idea what makes a board fast, slow, tippy, or stable. Sorry to hijack!

No problemo Oz.  The width is pretty narrow and the shape of the rails and bottom, and lack of a sunken deck make for a fast, but tippy, board.  Lighter guys can handle these boards a bit more easily.  I am 200lbs,  top heavy upper body with average balance.  Board goes great downwind and upwind, but is more of a challenge in significant cross chop, side wind, confused water, boat wakes, etc.

Rieordie,  PaddleBoard Specialists list the X-14 at $2799 (ouch!). I found it by typing in the key word "pro" in their website search box. Unfortunately for those of us on a budget they only make it in the SCC construction ($carbon$). Hopefully they will make it in the TWCC version one day. I can tolerate a little extra weight on my board more than I can tolerate the extra $500 difference in construction price. They currently show it as out of stock (as is the X-12 Pro). Like you I would love to hear more feedback on the board when it becomes available.

GOOD FIND VIKING.  YOU WOULD NOT KNOW IT IS THERE OTHERWISE.  NOTICED IN THE VIDEO THAT GARY SAYS THAT THE X 14 IS 28.5, BUT THE LITERATURE SAYS 29.5  MUST BE LAST YEAR'S DESCRIPTION.  MY HEAD SAYS GET THE X 14 IN TWCC, BUT MY HEART SAYS GO FOR THE NARROW AND MORE EXPENSIVE PRO IN SCC.  ANY CHANCE YOU WANT TO SWAP THAT WIKI?  I HAVE TWO KE NALU MALIKO'S WITH EXTENDED ERO T AND XTUF(S) SHAFTS.  BOUGHT ONE FOR MY WIFE, BUT SHE NEVER USES IT.  THINKING ABOUT TRYING THE WIKI.  GOTTA GET RID OF EITHER MY 2011 14 JAVELIN, OR 2014 GLIDE, BEFORE BRING HOME A NEW BOARD.  I AM IN SC, SO IF YOU KNOW ANYONE INTERESTED, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  BOTH HAVE BEEN LAKE PADDLED AND IN GREAT SHAPE.  GLIDE HAS ONE TINY DING FROM SHIPPING.  JAVELIN IS DING FREE.  BOTH HAVE CLEAR 3M RAIL TAPE AND HAVE BEEN RACK KEPT IN MY GRAGE.  I KEEP MY STUFF NICE.

One of the descriptions for the 26" SIC X-14 was it is built for speed over stability. You are 205 pounds and looking for a good measure of stability in side chop/crosswind with a 26" wide SUP? That's a lot to ask for a 200 pound rider. I'm interested to hear about the SIC X-14 X 26" and how it performs in all conditions. There is quite a few videos on youtube showing the X-12 and X-14 in beach start racing. I'm really interested in the SIC X-14 but in the wider width because I'm not into racing. The new Hobie Apex comes in a 27.5" width, which looks interesting.

Last year's x-14 was 29'5 wide and the year before was 28'5. 2013 model was too wide but the rocker was more suitable for a race board than the 2012 model. This year's pro model is 26' and can be tricky in choppy water for a heavy rider.
Maybe the SB 14x28' can be a better option.

That's why I am thinking about the 2014 x14 SCC that is 28.5 wide. I am wondering how the 28.5 compares to the PRO model which is 26 wide. Do you lose much a
Speed and gain much in stability going to 28.5? What is the weight target for the PRO?

Hi Ride, I just received my X14 pro and have ridden the standard width as well. Disclaimer, I paddle in flat to moderate chop but do not have waves to contend with. The X14 Pro is a very versatile board. I have owned many narrow boards such as 14x25 Sprint, 14x25 Ace, prototype M&M. All of these boards were fast but lacked true versatility. I am 5,9 and 185lbs so similar in weight and height. The X14 Pro pivot turns with ease, is super quiet in the water and catches small runners  !Love the fact it has ample volume for my weight. Now the bad news, it is tippy because the rails are so rounded. I like round rails. Optimal in constant side chop? Most likely not. If I was going to compare this board to others, a higher volume, narrower M&M. I would guess it would be similar to your Jav but with less rocker and lighter weight. Both my brother and I have weighed ours and they come in at 23 lbs with fin. Uber light!! Will be posting a full review with pics soon, good luck!

interested to hear more about the x14 PRO. obviously local conditions contribute to a lot of these reviews. In hawaii I'd rather have rounder rails then hard rails anyday. Hard rails make side chop hard to deal with if your not paddling in a lake.

but yea, i'm curious as to your review of the board.

Traded my 14 Javelin in at the Carolina Cup.  Got a smoking deal on a used 28.5 X 14 SCC!!  so stoked!!  Only got to try it for five minutes in 15-20 mph winds, but VERY stable, turns with ease, seems fast down wind,  large pad is very comfy, loved the handle and all of the tie downs.  Kevlar plug, seems very light to me at 25 lbs.  Construction seems very good and the board is very stiff.  No noticeable flex like some carbon boards.  Very shallow fin, like about 7 inches or so.  The guy that traded it in said he only rode it ten times.  Traded it in for an X 14 Pro, because he said it was the best shape he has ever ridden.  Just wanted a bit more narrow.  I  could not ride it more because I was catching boards on the beach at the Cup and the nose of Annabel Anderson's decided to put a four inch gash in my left foot.  Nine stiches and best scar story ever.  My board is now named Annabel in her honor.  I will post a better review, once I get healed up and get in a some miles.  :)

Is the weight difference between the 2013 X14 TWC and SCC really only a pound? PB Specialists have them listed at 31 and 30lbs respectivlely. And the 2014's at 31 and 25 even though the 2014 TWC scaled down from 29.5 to 28.5, think the TWC should've shed a little weight.
