Anyone have experience with the Walden Magic SUP?
« on: December 01, 2013, 01:31:40 PM »
Anyone surfed on the Walden Magic SUP's?  What do you think?  For years I have ridden a Walden Mega Magic 8' traditional surfboard and have really liked it.  Now, I notice they have Magic SUP's available.   I'm thinking about getting the 9'11".

My background: I'm a longtime surfer who has recently transitioned to SUP.  A few months ago I bought an Edge 10' 6" E-Lite board as my first SUP.  It's a surf capable, beginner board and it's not bad, but I am finding that I'm already wishing for something that turned a little quicker on waves.  I'm not interested in a short board for slashing and shredding.  Too hard to catch waves, too much work, been there/done that on traditional surfboards. Now I just cruise, cutback, and occasionally get tubed.  Nothing impressive, but I love it...especially on an SUP.

Would a Magic 9"11' be a good choice for an old cruiser like me?

You don't have a demo model do you?  I'm sure you don't, but it doesn't hurt to ask.  Would love to try before I buy, but that rarely possible.  I am very close to your location.

I had a custom made by Steve a few years back - 9'6" Magic Model - 29.5" wide.  I sold the board because I moved away from SOCAL, but with the paddle, I could turn that board as hard as I could a prone shortboard.  I've also had two of Steve's longboards (also with the Magic Model bottom contours) and I loved those as well.  I would NOT get the 9'11" - you'll wish you had something shorter in less than a month of using it.

9'6" is really a great length - not too short that waves pass under you because you can't generate enough speed to catch the smaller slow rollers, and not to big that you can't get into the pocket quickly after take off.

I wish I still had that board...

I had the 9'4" that was made by Global Surf Industries. It was the best nose riding SUP I ever was on. Actually better nose rider than any longboard I ever had. But was 29" wide so kinda tippy for 9'4". But it was also ver maneuverable. If the contest criteria was more like a longboard criteria I'd still be riding it.
Thanks
