Love that 9'1"!  Please come back with a full report on how it rides and stability.

Interesting how the Naish 9'10" Hokua 2013?  The one with the slight concave deck was a board I was very interested in. I weigh 225 lbs and for my weight I felt the 9'10" at 30 1/4 wide seemed just a little too small for me.  That 9'1" looks just right.  Some great shapes coming out for heavier riders finally.

I would love a comparison between the 9'1" Hokua and the 8'10 AllWave by supthecreek.

However you want to slice it 5" is ridiculous and thick especially for how wide the board is.  The 9'0" SlatchJim posted up is about the same volume as the 9'1" and is 4.5.

I am curious to see what they did that required a 5" thick board.  I hope the rails are paper thin.

You have to remember that Naish numbers are slightly different than most other brands... sometimes.
The 9' Mana was listed at 190 liters for years. Then without changing a thing except for the graphics it somehow morphed into a 165 liter board.
So maybe that 9'1" at 5 inches thick is really about 4 1/2" thick. Or maybe not.

Can't wait to hear the fully skinny on the fat boy DJ.

Thickness is the most misunderstood and misleading factor in surf design

I agree. I only write length, width, and volume on most of my boards.

When I started hearing people of the beach debating what boards would and would not work for them based on thickness, I thought.....yikes

Wrong.

The wider a board gets the more rise in deck dome. I'll guess it has 5/8" rise. And 3/16" rise from V on the bottom.  Making its comparable real world thickness only 4.19. Pretty thin for a big boy model.

Until now, the Manas were indicated as an entry level wave board and also as performance board for big guys in small and medium waves. I compared the measures of the new Hokuas X32 and the 2014 Manas and found this.

Mana 9'5" 2014 - Length: 9'5"; Width: 32"; Thickness: 4 3/4"; Volume: 163L; Max rider weight: 210 lbs / 95 Kg

Hokua X32 LE 9'1" - Length: 9'1"; Width: 32"; Thickness: 5"; Volume: 150L; Max rider weight: 240 lbs / 109 Kg

What I don't understand is that basically, both boards are aimed for the same kind of users and the same kind of wave condition (unexperienced lighter riders or experienced heavy riders in small to medium waves). So how come the Mana has more floatation than the Hokua X32 (163L x 150L) and yet, the Hokua is indicated for heavier surfers? Any ideas why is this so?

You can have a 5" thick board that's thin and a 4" board that's thick. It's all in the foil so don't assume a 5" thick board is this monstrous behemoth
Boards:

8-10 x 31 Egg
8-11 X 32 Double wing Fangtail Tom Whitaker
8-6 X 30 1\2  Inbetweener Tom Whitaker
8-4 x 30 Hyper quad Tom Whitaker (wife's now)
8-4 X 31 1\4.  Round (wide) Diamond Tail Quad Tom Whitaker
9-4 X 30 1\2. Swallow Stinger Quad Tom Whitaker (ex wifes now)

I could be eating crow soon, but my guess is.....

1) The X32 is CNC cut core, vac bagged, higher end, higher price, targeted to the harder core customer. So the customer with more skill, so it gets a heavier rider rating.

2) The pulled tail and nose remove a LOT of volume. It really is for the more skilled heavy customer.

Slatch, I tried to get that North Pacific shipped to Florida when it came up for sale.  I've ridden a 9'3" version and liked it.

The Naish boards have a similar profile to the JP Australia wide bodies.  I rode the 8'4" and liked it. Super stable for me at 212 lbs.

Sexy looking board DJ

Naish should follow my lead and stop publishing thickness. Just give volume.  ;D

They don't look "too thick" at all...nice volume distribution...but, Yikes!...my first impression is that it looks like banana (push water) rocker was used from looking at the profile pics...;-)

Dunno why this is news, actually...we've been designing and building low aspect ratio, higher volume, quad+1, high performance standup boards for surf competent bigger guys, for 6-7 years now...

It would be bigger news if they offered them in anything other than yellow...;-)
Anyone know pricing...are they gonna be $2800ish?
