Maui open water SUP for beginners

Just returned from Maui.  Weather is still warm (80 degrees).  We stayed at Napili Bay, which is another great place for flatwater beginners wanting to transition to open water.  Rental shops are a short walk from the beach.  Napili Kai Resort will store rental boards from one of the nearby 808 SUP rental shop.  Most days are calm but we had a couple of small surf days, which can get compicated as you navagate through the snorklers and swimmers.  I had the chance to coach a few newbies.  One nice lady actually had both the board and paddle backwords with the leash fastend to her wrist.  Don't see that too often in my hometown.  Parking at Napili Bay is limited-get there early.  Mornings are also very calm and my favorite part of the day anyway.  You can check out the bay on a controlable webcam located at the Napili Sunset Resort website.  So if you're learning or a flatwater SUP but looking to SUP in open water, Napili Bay might be worth a go.  Be warned that Napili Kai is a bit pricey...other choices might be worth considering.  No matter where you stay...check out the Wednesday night Hawaiin slack key show at Napili Kai, and bust the budget a little for drinks and pupus at Merriman's Restaurant at sunset.  Aloha!
