New SIC Bullet: Steering System - Cables Unraveling/Fraying
« on: November 08, 2013, 06:59:38 PM »
My new Bullet 17' arrived today - very excited, but bummed to see that the steering cables are fraying at the ends, leaving it impossible to feed the cables through the holes in the cable rod to setup the steering system. Any ideas? Has anyone seen this before? They fray immediately and start unravelling when feeding the cable through the little holes in the cable rod. (pic of cable rod attached for reference).

You guessed it, this wasn't a Maui built board.

They typically give you plenty of cable. Old cycling tip - cut the frayed end off completely with high quality cutters. Don't use a crap pair as they will encourage fraying. When you have a good end, heat it with a soldering gun and melt some solder into the cable. It will then resist fraying and you can feed it through the board. There is a good video from SIC on setting up your steering system. Here's the link:

You don't need a ton of solder, just enough to penetrate into the strands and bind them.

yes best thing to do is solder the ends how ever you will want to use silver solder on stainless steel. if you dont have have the stuff do do that you may get away with taping the ends long enough to do the job. just make sure you have some really good sharp cutters to cut through in once snip.

It would be handy if you cropped that photo.

All steering cables fray, even the Maui=built boards, they don't tin them with silver solder. they should, but they don't. the three hole threaded end is actually the latest and greatest. It's good because you can easily adjust the cable length. I don't bother tinning, I just get the adjustment good and push the cable back into the sleeve.

I rigged up a new F16 (production/Cobra) a few weeks ago, and all of the cable ends had tiny sleeves of tape over the ends to keep them together.  Did yours not come that way? ???
