Anybody ever surf Georgia?
« on: October 29, 2013, 04:40:26 PM »
I live in Atlanta Ga and normally travel to Cocoa beach (8 hr drive)or the Panama City beach (6 hr drive) to catch waves. Tybee Island GA is 4 hours away, which makes a day trips possible, as opposed to the 2 or 3 day trips to FLA.

It looks like a little something is acting up and there may be a little wave action coming up here soon. So Just wondering if i should explore some Georgia options, or just  deal with the drive and be happy.

Tybee and surrounding area is great for Flatwater Paddling.  If your looking for surf they have it occasionally at the pier. Better to go Jax and Cocoa Beach.

I haven't explored Jacksonville's breaks yet. Might have to give that a shot it is 2 hours closer than Cocoa.

Based on surf reports, it seems Tybee always a foot or 2 smaller than FLA.

I got this great board that DW made, and waiting for a swell is killing me. I need to convince my wife to go to Puerto Rico this winter or something.

The water depth offshore in Georgia and South Carolina is very shallow for many miles out. It knocks the wave size down considerably. Thats why its always small there when Fla and NC are getting bigger waves.
But there are waves, so go exploring, check the ocean charts and look for where the deepest water is and check it out.

I just moved from Jacksonville to Tybee this summer. If you can drive just a couple of more hours Jax is WAY better. However I have had a bunch of fun in Tybee. Be sure to catch the high tide and surf between the pier and the danger marker to the south. The sandbars to the south break further out and there won't be the crowds that you can get closer to the pier. This weekend should be fun. I'll be out fri-sat. Jax for Sunday. Good luck, see you out there!

Thanks for the tip. I might see you there Saturday. I'm keeping an eye on the gulf also.

Maybe a negative (as CNN says, is this good or bad?) for surf but shallow depth means great DW possibilities IF the wind comes up.  However I've never heard of strong wind either.

I went to school at Georgia Southern so Tybee was my local surf break at only 1 hour away. Little Tybee also had a pretty good break on a noreaster. If the waves were really good or if it was the weekend, I just trucked it down to Jacksonville or occasionally up to Folly Beach.

Any particular spots in Jacksonville that lends itself to stand up surfing?

Its looking like it could be a good few days coming up here.

Any Where but the main peak on the poles or the Pier.  Miles and Miles of waves all the way down to St Augustine if you wish.  We have a good group here in Jax and spread it out.  PM me if you want to go out with us early Saturday Morning.

Mil, Hope you like Savannah.  I lived there for 6 years before moving to Jax in 1995.  Jax has more waves and more consistent waves,  not that you can't luck into waves occasionally around  Tybee or Hilton Head Island.  My buddy used to drive down from Savannah every weekend to surf here in Jax. He keeps two boards at my house.  He has since moved to Costa Rica and I keep two boards at his house.

The poles was my usual spot in Jax which I do miss. I lived on the navy base(although I am in the Coast Guard) so I could always go to the base side if crowds got bad and did not have to worry about parking ever. Great crowd, great waves. Check out the 911surf report. Savannah is great, Tybee waves not so much but still can be fun. I might also be the only one that windsurfs here. I get the the whole beach to myself when the wind is up and I have scored quite a few days since being here. Hopefully the wind/waves pick up a bit through the rest of fall and into the winter.
