one point too (don't think it was mentioned) is that you need to walk a bit on the board. I will often take off with my front foot maybe 1ft from the front of the board (on my 8'0") and then quickly step back as I drop in.

With a longer board, it will glide early, so you can stay in the same spot, but on a short board, you need to weight the nose to get it to drop in.

don't be afraid to walk all over. Often on tiny waves, I'll step really far forward, drop the nose in, and then almost kick the board forward (jump up and kick it in front of you as you move back). This pushes the board forward on the wave without being encumbered by your weight.

Surf stance take off for sure.... only time I use the parallel stance while taking off on a wave is if it's a really slow wave and you have plenty of time and usually on a bigger board....

Thanks all, for great insight.

For too long, I would reposition on my 8/6 or 8/11 as the wave arrived, but was also shifting my weight backwards and effectively kicking out of the wave.  Have changed that with good results, though sometimes one can sink the nose or get off the board centerline.

On a smaller board with less glide, you might be able to accelerate more if you have the paddling technique.  For me, it was critical to:  sink the paddle and put the body into it and not let up.  See Dave Kalama website for this.

Here is another idea

Thae advantage of the AW 8'10 is acceleration (where the 10'6 has more top end paddling speed)
Spend some time flatrwater paddling accelorating and turning Your timing is off the 10'6 took longer to get up to speed but was slightly faster paddling Start a bit latter accelorate as fast as yuou can and dont try to hold that speed to catch the wave let the wave do that work

just my 2 cents

Sorry this reply is a little late, but I'll throw in my point of view anyway.  I'm new to SUS, but I have surfed prone for a long, long time.  I have no trouble catching waves on my AW 8'10 and you have got me thinking about why that is.  I think the answer is something gained from prone surfing experience.  It's all about acceleration and weight shift at the proper moment.  There is a moment when the wave begins to lift up the back of your board that you have to pour on max acceleration and shift weight forward.  The timing of the moment you pour on the acceleration is critical.   Start the hard paddling too soon you lose the burst of speed when it is needed.  Start the hard paddling too late and your acceleration does not match the moment the wave lifts your board so the wave passes under you.  Time it right and your board comes up onto a plane at the moment the wave begins to push you, so the wave is able to push you with less resistance.

It takes a lot of practice to get the timing right.  Keep practicing max paddling acceleration and weight shift at the moment the wave lifts the tail of your board.  Once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature.
