Werner Carve
« on: October 04, 2008, 01:08:31 PM »
Two days now with the new paddle.... Shoulder high mushy waves, glass and nuking wind... (thats Maui)... First impression was wow, this thing feels like a toy..  So light and comfortable... Other paddle is the Kialoa - forgot the model.  The handle on the Werner is very very comfortable. I'm used to the oval shaft so that was not a change. I'm still not totally sure about the smaller blade size. At first it seemed like I was not getting the power that the Kialoa had but the more I used it, the more I like this paddle. And at $200, I think its a great deal.  I purchased on the recommendation of another pretty big guy who was using it and loved it. Course he was used to an otter tail paddle.

Thanks for the pictures.. how does the shaft flex compare between the two?

Didnt notice any difference.. Dont think I'm big enough at 125lbs to cause really any flex on either paddle.

Can you feel any flex in the blade during the power stroke?  I was looking at this paddle in my local shop and seemed a lot different than the all carbon blades - more apt to flex (my opinion).

Did you get to drag the blade during a turn?  If yes, how was the shape for helping your turns?  Sticky, smooth?

Finally I get a review about a paddle that I've been interested in since it first came out, thanks Tracy, you've peaked my curiosity even more about it.  By the way, is that your tripod on the leash?  Looks like a good buddy.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Yeah the tripod is my little buddy... he's always first outta the truck...

Paddle update... let a very picky friend try this morning and HE LIKED IT... He's a very good surfer/paddler and his comment was it goes through the water very easy and felt good. Approx 165lbs, 5'10".

I tried his paddle - Quickblade, kinda spoon shaped (not curved) and it seemed like it skipped on the wave whereas the Carve was just there. I think I like this paddle more the more I use it.

Anyone looking for a Werner Carve in SoCal, I am selling mine due to to much equipment and no time to get out in the surf.  It's been used one time.  Check out classified.

Glad to hear everyone is liking the Carve.   Originally we set out to make a smaller paddle that would provide maximum turning efficiency and low end acceleration for catching waves.  Little did we know the Carve would also turn out to be a great distance and racing paddle! ;)
BTW:   I used this paddle for the 22 mile Lake Tahoe Crossing (The Fall Classic) and it worked very very well for the 4 + hrs of continuous paddling at 80-90% ;D

Cool looking profile on the blade. Almost looks like a slightly flexed swim fin. Looks fast and efficient. I've been using a narrow blade paddle for almost a year now and I love it. Less resistance in the surf and for distance paddling too, but no less efficient. I'm a smaller guy at 5'9" and 150 pounds. Perfect for me. It did take a couple three sessions to get used to though, but now it's dialed.

I am trying to find the Adjustable Werner Carve paddle.  Anybody know of a shop on the US mainland that stocks them?

I finally got one!  Tracy was the first one who posted a review, and I really appreciated it, I'd been hoping for a review about this paddle.  I was attracted to it because of the slight arch in the paddle face, kinda like my hand while prone surfing, and the narrowness, adding to the cadence.  In other words,  I was thinking that it would feel more like my hand while prone surfing, both in it's shape and it's increased cadence/rhythm due to it's smaller face, making it feel more like my arm strokes, when stroking for a wave.
I've only used it twice so far, but I think I was more right than anything else.  It's proving to be a very 'human' paddle.
It's super light, the price is right, and easy to spot in the water.  I won't call it magic, don't believe in magic, but it's got some cosmic effort that went into it's design.  Good job Werner, and thanks again Tracy, the second mouse gets the cheese colored paddle!  ;)
It takes a quiver to do that.
