48-50MPH for a huge sailboat...incredible! Whoever came up with the idea of a catamaran that goes up on foils was really thinking out the box. The AC72 is like something out of a sci-fi movie.

ORACLE CALLS OFF RACE DUE TO MOET SPILL.

Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithall called off the second of two scheduled America’s Cup races yesterday. A key crew member spilled a glass of Moet during the first race, causing havoc onboard. Oracle lost that race by a margin of 1 minute and 5 seconds to Team New Zealand.

“It was a traumatic event for the whole crew,” Spithall told journalists following Oracle’s decision to play their wild card to postpone the race. “John Kostecki, our tactician, just poured his second glass of Moet when a freak gust of wind caught him off guard. The glass toppled, ruining his Team Oracle shirt and completely traumatizing the entire team.”

Kostecki was visibly shaken by the spillage and struggled to contain his emotions during the press conference, “I can’t believe we not only lost a glass of Moet but the lead and eventually the race. I feel so responsible. As soon as the glass tipped, I felt the morale of the entire crew drop faster than the windward hull during a bad gybe. We were leading Team New Zealand at the time. Suddenly the crew had to take their eyes off the race to make sure we didn't lose the whole bottle. Jimmy was very good about it. Within seconds of the accident, he was off the wheel and at my side with a napkin. Being the man that he is, he offered me not only his own glass but a new shirt as well. By then it was too late. I was inconsolable.”

Team New Zealand, disappointed that they couldn’t get another win under their belts while Oracle was down in the dumps, understood how troubling such a spillage could be.

“It’s a difficult thing to deal with as a team,” Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker said. “We only have Lindauer Special Reserve onboard our boat, but we’d be pretty distraught if any of the boys spilled their drink during a race. I nearly tipped my glass over foiling full speed around a buoy once. I managed to hold on, but the team was pretty shaken up.”

Oracle announced that their design team will be creating new carbon cup holders for future races. Team New Zealand has confirmed they too are responding to the risk, though they won’t make any changes. Crew members will simply drink straight from their own bottles, “Just like any other Friday night in central Auckland.”

The way they show speed, distance, on board video, and superimpose graphics on the course in real time has made it one of the most fun races to watch in any sport.
