STC would recommend the 9'10" Allwave  :)

+1 for the 9'10 allwave for surf
or Starboard Avanti for surf/allround
or Starboard Atlas for easy flat water cruising + first waves (12' surftech universal would also work)
or if it's flat water only try 14' x 30" Fanatic Falcon
In theory, there should be no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is...

Funny... the first board that popped into my mind was the 11'2 x 36 Starboard Avanti. ;D
290  & 6'5 is a big fella.
Considerations that matter are:
Surf experience... none?... Avanti
Age....over 55?... Avanti

If you are just starting out, the 9' 10 Allwave may be a bit premature.

The Avanti is SUPER stable, very floaty at 230 lts and surfs GREAT for such a big board... not to mention it is a really good flat-water board. You could research the Starboard Whopper Extra 10' x 36... but I have heard the Avanti surfs better.

I rode a lot of big boards, and still do. The Avanti is better than most of the wide high volume boards

If you are an experienced surfer, and fit.... the 9'10 Allwave will float you and is very stable. It surfs way better than the Avanti IF you are comfortable on it.

JimK is your size... you may want to call him and chat. He is a great source of info for big guys and surf SUPs

If it will be just for flat-water... disregard all of the above :D

Started at 6'3" 290 on the Avanti-amazing board for its size.  If you've been SUPing for awhile, then the 9'10" Allwave is the game.

thanks all. it's for one of my students.  newbie, probably mostly flat water paddler, not very athletic. he's stoked on sup. my Surftech 12' Universal didn't feel wide enough, maybe a bit thick (corky).  :)  cheers.

Something with an extra layer of glass under the deck pad. ::)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

the Bark Eliminator is supposedly made for paddlers from 220 to 290.  I am on a Bark Laird.  I weight 210 lbs and it's the board that I needed and it works incredible for me.  However, while I have seen specs that say it's for 210 lbs and up....I don't think the laird would be good for someone at 290 lbs.  It's volume is 275 L .  The Eliminator is around 330 L.
Faster than some, slower than most....

Ke Nalu Molokai on an Xtuf
Maliko Blade that gets interchanged

Rob,

Since I'm this size and through our shop (right on the beach) we've had folks this size and as much as i LOVE the AW 9'10 that isn't the board for this guy. I have 2 great options

Coreban Mamouth Nice in flatwater but even at his size kind of a handful in the surf.
Fanatic Fly 11'6 Does it all plus practically bomb proof construction and for its size a reasonable weight.

BTW You cAn get the Coreban in light construction if weight is an issue but construction can be touchy

Hope it helps
