There are cases to GoPro your smartphone, you can even get them with adapter lenses to make the wider angle. Unfortunately the best one I found is available for the iPhone 4 but they don't make an iPhone 5 case. I haven't searched lately because I've got two new GoPros.

Mophie do the OutRide case for iPhone 4 &4S looks the goods with wide angle adaptor lense and plenty of accessories i:e battery boost packs etc  full waterproof case and several mount options now I just have to get rid of my droid phone

I have a 12x telephoto for my iPhone 5.

Not amazing but nice for shooting surfing and $39.

I'm looking at an Olympus micro 4/3 and the wife shoots DSLR video all the time but to be honest, 90% are of course smartphone pics.

The smartphone is a revelation for my business. I am a civil/structural engineer and to go in the field meant always having to remember a camera, extra batteries, extra card and so on. In an office where any number of staff may have used one of the cameras and then not put it back on the charger or whatever I had plenty of times where I got into the field only to get a full SD card, and half a battery life. Now we all just use our phones.

I design a lot of pedestrian bridges, most are on mountain or forest trails. Before smart phone we would have to carry a GPS/altimeter to locate these, now with Dropbox, Google Maps, and other iPhone tech my pictures are tied to the Lat, Long and Elevation of the bridge site before I sit back down in my office. What a timesaver! I don't charge any less though.
