La Jolla Shores: Hot Coffee and sweet links!
« on: August 26, 2007, 11:32:47 PM »
If you haven't been paddling with Mike Pollard (www.international-waterman.com) and you get an invite- don't blow it, say YES. I got the message on Friday night- meet in the LJShores parking lot 7am- "going to make a little run up to Blacks with some friends and I'll have hot coffee."

What I thought would be the trucker sized mug from 7-11 turned out to be some wicked Kona Blend fresh from a french press straight out the back of Pollard's Jeep.... What tha? This dude knows how to get a run (or the runs) started!

Hopped in the water with MOFO and Tex and followed Pollard up to Black's. Kind of a tough paddle, little south wind, morning sickness on the water but it was a good paddle, a nice workout. The surf ended up being a little bumped out, but there were serviceable lefts and a morning in the water is never something to take for granted.

Best part: I walk up to the parking lot and there's Pollard sizzling up some sweet links and warming up some tortillas... what tha? Delectable. Could've devoured four more.

Moral of the story: Show up, you never know what might happen. And, Pollard rules.

Sounds like a great time was had by all woh attended. I hope, when I visit California, I can hook up and go on a run as fun as that sounds.

Aloha,

we missed having Allen on the trip, but that just meant more sausages for me!

Thanks for the kind words John!  Always good to paddle with you and your bros.

For all of you that have been surfing your whole life and not made coffee with sausage and tortillas, you're missing out.  I carry my $20 camp stove with me always, along with everything I need to make coffee.  When I feel ambitous and have time, I stop off at the local market and grab $4 worth of food to put on the fire.  This is one of the best parts of surfing for me - hanging with the bros afterward and talking a bit o' smack.

Anyone paddling this weekend?

~Aloha~

I can not believe I have not thought of doing this. I mean I bring a cooler full of water, and gatorade, and a lot of other food. But I never thought about a mini hibachi or something. Thanks for the idea. I am going to buy one tomorrow, and toss it in the Van.

...be careful not to leave the fuel canisters in a hot car -------BOOM!!  As we say in sailing when something breaks, "not fast".

Wait until you catch your first sunrise with coffee brewing on the tailgate, seeing your breath in the morning air, laughing at your friends' "bedface".  All a priceless part of the experience.

FYI, John and his friends do not have "bedface".  Not sure about Allan yet.

~Aloha~

Thanks for the tip, again. I live in Florida, so the inside of a car can get upwards of 15 degrees. I think I will just get a charcoal mini-hibachii. No gas to worry about that way.
