Waterproof GPS - which is best for SUP?
« on: July 10, 2013, 07:38:52 AM »
I paddle a Bark Dominator for pleasure and fitness.  I am new to SUP and I am only paddling in coastal flat water (inside).  I have a life long history with cycling and I always use a cycle computer (Cateye) to help motivate me with my cycling.        For use on my SUP is there a brand and model GPS that is favored for a few basic functions: distance, average speed, maximum speed, time - whatever?
Thanks
Bill

I know the Garmin 910xt @ $400 is pretty popular, along with the Garmin 310xt @ $250.

I use my Samsung Galxy 4 and use the free "endomondo app" which works great. I put it on the Kayak setting (no SUP setting yet). I bought a $12 waterproof zip up for my cell and just stuff it in my boardshorts. The endomondo app tracks everything: speed, time, distance, calories burned, avg pace, and a map of your route. Only downside compared to the garmin is you can't track your distance in the middle of your run like you can on the garmin by glancing down at your watch.

I have the Garmin 910xt. Great waterproof watch. I use it for swimming as well. One cool thing about the Garmin is the Garmin Connect site which uploads your data to the cloud and you can share/compare performance data.

Check out Velocitek SpeedPuck http://store.velocitek.com/SpeedPuck.  I own one of their older products, and have not used this one.

I have an old Garmin 305 that I don't use much, mostly I use my iPhone in a lifeproof case with a secondary drybag case that keeps it secure in my camelback near my shoulder. then I use Motion-X for tracking. Motion-x give audible pacing prompts at the interval you choose that tells you current speed, distance traveled, heart rate, etc.. It also plays music from iTunes and cuts the volume back when it's prompting you. You can also take geocoded pictures or video that get attached to your track map. I think it's 20 or 30 bucks.

You might want to check out the Garmin 72H Waterproof Handheld GPS. It floats in water and is IPX7 waterproof. I don't have one but I'm happy enough with the other Garmin units I own (the Nuvï 50 and GPSMAP 62S).

Garmin 310xt is quite an improvement over the 305. I find many excellent improvements and it is good for other sports. Look around for good prices. Bought one earlier this year for 150. Slimmer gps enabled watches are out there but they still are bulky enough I don't like them for general use.

I like the feature that the watch vibrates at each 1 mile distance and shows pace for the last mile.

Garmin connect I am starting to use and hope to see it become more feature rich in the future. Seems a little difficult to figure out. Some examples tutorials would be good.

How do these watches work when you want to see how fast you're going and your arm is stroking away?

If you have a Starboard, you can mount a speedpuck to the slot on the deck. Velcro works for other boards. Love the instant feedback on changing trim or paddle technique, it tells you what works. But the Veloteck software sucks if you have a PC, so I have to where my Garmin 305 to review my data.

I need to get a simple GPS to put on the board.
I have two options selected: Garmin Foretrex 301 or etrex 10. Anybody has experience with any of them?
I need a large screen, current speed, avg speed, distance and time information plus reasonably good battery time.

+1 on the Speedpuck, it has a big, easy to see readout for instant feedback, which is great for training.
We have it on sale for $299 plus $6 shipping in the US:

Yes the Speedpucks are excellent, and are a hugely motivating tool for improving stroke. They do eat through batteries fast though.

I like my speedpuck for training and racing. Rechargeable batteries work well.
