Johnny Cash singing from Nine Inch Nails.
One just assumes the oldest generation thinks the next gen's music is crap.  That its always the younger re-interpreting the older.

All of these posts show how good pieces/songs transcend style.

One thing I love about musicians is how so many of them don't believe in boundaries or categories.  They listen to music entirely different than what they perform (or maybe it's only different on the surface).  They respect musicians in other genres and other generations.  It makes what they do so much richer.  Some have musical backgrounds entirely different than what they perform--jazz musicians who started in classical music, rock singers who started in opera, etc.  I love that my daughter is listening to Tony Bennett because he recorded with Amy Winehouse.  Johnny Cash is a great example of all this.  Some move from one style to another even though they risk alienating their fans....

I remember when Bob Dylan went "electric", many of his hardcore fans thought that was one of the most sacrilegious things that any folk artist could do.  The world will come to an ugly end.
That was every early on during his long sucessful career.
One of the best concerts I ever went to, was Bob Dylan when we was touring with Tom Petty about 20 years ago, when the two of them shared the stage together, it was magic, and fully electric.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Here's a haunting rendition of Mad World originally done by Tears for Fears. Never realized the lyrics hiding in their upbeat popiness. Bonus, the video was directed by Michel Gondry.

Louis Armstrong song from LPB above reminded me of these versions of What a Wonderful World:

(first heard this thanks to DJ on his end of summer video)

I saw Phillip Phillips last night, he opened for John Mayer, great concert, under the stars with a full moon.
Very impressed with both of them.
It takes a quiver to do that.

How am I just now seeing this thread??? Great tunes everyone. Special props to gafas for mentioning Johnny Cash doing "Hurt" - first time I ever heard that I got the chills!

Here are some of my faves:

Pearl Jam covering 'Baba O'Riley':

Chrissie Hynde covering 'I Shall Be Released'

Battleme cover of "Hey Hey My My"

Don't forget about the awesome one and only Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers.  The single greatest cover band in the history of the world.
