Werner Carve thoughts?
« on: July 16, 2013, 05:43:15 PM »
Looking at getting a new paddle in the $200 or so range.  Looking at the Werner Carve.  Wanted  to get a few opinions.
Me.. I have been standup surfing for 3 years now and using an off brand Carbon paddle with an 9' blade.

I love my Werner Carve.  I've been surfing with it for three years and love the flex and narrow blade. Of course I haven't tried a Ke Nalu yet and only have other carbon adjustables to compare it against. It's also indestructible.  It's heavier than your standard carbon paddle but it doesn't bother me at all.

Funny, I was just considering the 3 piece Carve to go along with my new ULI. I'm in the process of doing research as well. I felt one and the weight really isn't too bad either.

I have been looking at the Werner Stinger 3-piece which is the river paddle they make in same construction as the Carve. They seem bomb proof, and are not to pricey. I was waiting to see if prices drop on them in the fall, but my obsession is getting best of me. I have already researched the heck out of them, so just need to pull the trigger.

I have a Werner Carve and love it.

I got it as my first paddle because of the price range as well.

I think it's a great paddle, great price, lots of flex and indestructible.  You don't have to worry about damaging it like you would a carbon fiber paddle.

Highly recommended.

Dittos all the way.
The only thing different is that it's my second paddle, and puts my first one to shame, a wood and glass Sawyer, which I only use for a loner, and/or teaching.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Went to my local shop yesterday to get the 3 piece carve but they had just sold it the day before. Oh we'll, settled for the 3 piece Nitro instead...how disappointing...NOT! Sure I paid more, but that Nitro is awesome!

You'll love it. I second what others have said -- it's indestructible. Mine is two years old, with lots of surfing behind it and it looks barely used. If I were racing I'd want something lighter, but surfing? It's great. And the narrow blade instantly solved elbow/ forearm pain I'd had with a much wider blade. Got it cheap too, about $180.

I've had a couple of them for 3 or 4 years and couldn't be happier with them.  Yeah, you might save a few ounces with a carbon, but for $150 bucks cheaper and more durability the carve is an attractive choice.

I think that the Carve is a great paddle.  The three piece is probably the best travel paddle on the market (for the price).  I think the carve is a really good surfing paddle.
