Almond butter cheaper to buy it or make it?
« on: June 18, 2013, 02:27:22 PM »
For those of you that have lived this already..is there any advantage to making your own almond butter? Or it one of those things that sounds good until you fork out a huge amount of cash for something like a Vitamix and factor in the cost of organic raw almonds, the mess/clean up, only to find it way less hassle and less expensive in the end to buy it at $20.00 a jar?

$20/jar?!  Get it online maybe?  I get mine at a local grocery (Sprouts) for $5-6 so I think the "buy" route is better.  I'm not sure my Vitamix could do almond butter anyway...

AJR...I am trying to get equal quality to the $20.00 per/jar stuff...Raw/Organic/No additives, zero, zip...the $5 to $6 a jar in my area has all kinds of crap in it...including hydrogenated oils....I eat almond butter a lot with Granny Smith apples...pretty much every day....I want to avoid junk food disguised as health food. Maybe yours is pure because you are located closer to the almond source and the price reflects that...

Do you have a Trader Joe's around? The almond butter I have at work is only raw almonds. Definitely less than $20. It isn't organic, but it is tasty and unsalted.

The only ingredient in Trader Joe's almond butter is "dry roasted almonds"...for $5.99/jar.

Now if it were poured over the bosoms of some of the ladies from the "Hot Chicks on Stand Up Paddle Boards" thread before being jarred, that might justify $20/jar, but until then....

Like this?  $10 for a 16 oz jar is equivalent to what I pay (I think I buy the 8 oz containers)...  Free shipping over $50...

Scratch my last comment! After reading up on the internet about the controversy regarding actual "raw" almonds along with post-harvest pesticide treatment, I have changed my mind. I have now decided to buy from a grower that makes some tasty looking almond butter. Expensive at 11.50 for 16 oz, but I will report back on how good it tastes!

That almond butter could have the propylene oxide treatment as it says it is pasteurized but does not mention the method. "Organic" almonds use steam, while most of the others use PPO.  This almond butter could be either, but since they don't mention steam, they probably use the chemical method. You could write and ask them.

Depends on how much almond butter you are going to eat.  Vitamix is a bit of a pain in the ass to use to make it.  It works, but something like the Champion juicer works better.

I can get raw organic almonds at my local coop for about $12 pound.  Trader Joe's has them sometimes for about $7 for 12oz bag.  Hit or miss.  The good raw almond butter somewhere like Whole Foods runs about $15-16 for a 16oz jar.

If you buy a juicer or Vitamix you are going to be able to use it for a lot of other good things as well.

All the crap they use on non-raw organic almonds, I wouldn't trust any of that stuff.  You should soak the almonds first as well.

No Trader Joe's or Whole Foods in my area...On line looks like my best option....Local health food stores are $25.00+ I bought a jar today at Publix and it was $20.99

I bought organic almond butter in the standard size for $7.99 at Stop & Shop this week. Good stuff, cheap!
