The sticky volume thread
« on: June 01, 2013, 10:45:11 AM »
As a resource for new riders or advancing riders looking to downsize, here goes a sticky thread on Volume.

A ways back we had posted some rough guidelines and it would be cool to hear how far off those are considering new designs, more experienced riders, etc.  Now that a lot of (most?) brands are including volume #'s for surf models it will be interesting to hear how much over you are riding, and in what conditions.

You start getting near minimum comfortable volume for an experienced rider at something like:

Clothed rider weight + board weight + paddle weight + 20 L = minimum volume (all in Metric, of course).

How much over Clothed rider weight + board weight + paddle weight are you riding?

Why the +20L?

Clothed rider weight + board weight + paddle weight + 20 L = minimum volume

74 + 7 + 0.5 + 20L = 101.5L

Currently riding: 97L

= -4.5

Like JeanG I'm over. 88 +7 +.5 +20 =115.5.
Currently riding a 106 L after stepping up from a 92 L (and adding five pounds to myself). I can still paddle the little board but it's a lot of work!

Both my 9' & my 9' 10" boards are the same weight and volume at around 2 lbs and 125+ lts

My numbers are 82 + 11 + 7 + 20 = 120

We need to factor in my age at 65 years old into this equation.

92 + 10 + .5 + 20L = 122.5

Currently on a Starboard Converse+ = 140L

But then again I surf gutless waves in a shopping mall.

I could have been more clear.  To clarify, the plus 20 is factored in to what we had initially posted up.  So, for your 97 liter board you are at about 16 liters over Clothed rider weight + board weight + paddle weight .

Is that about where most of your boards are?

I added "How much over Clothed rider weight + board weight + paddle weight are you riding?" to the original post above.

We had originally discussed the 20 over as a comfortable minimum.  It might be interesting to hear the over range for riders of a variety of weights in a variety of conditions.

93+6.5+0.5+20=120 liters

110 liters is comfortable for me. Sometimes I surf a 100 liter

Good info, what is your typical wind/water condition?  It would be cool if we could add those in to these posts.

104 + 7 + .5 + 20L = 131.5 liters

Currently riding 113 liter board.
Taller than most, shorter than others.

88 + 5 + 1 + 20 = 114

Mach bobby roger +/- 90

Mach 1 92

TimSUP (aka f'ing retro) 97

Assym Step Up TimSUP (aka twisted f'ing retro) 105

Most of the time I am in glass to light chop... But have surfed all four in heavy wind and chop.  The first two are a challenge in heavy wind and chop, the last two are very manageable in heavy wind and chop.

Five hour sessions on the bigger boards are routine... On the smaller boards, anything over three is tough. (So I switch out. :) )

Plus 10 for bad hips or knees.
Plus 5 for every 5 years of age past 48.
Plus 5 for a mellow attitude in the water.

 Bingo. Right in the ballpark.

153 for me...my 9 is 160 and the 8-5 I'm guessing is somewhere around 140-150. This is a good for general reference but there are so many individual variables.  Hard to believe it took me so long to master a 12-6 210L board at the beginning.

Oh yeah,  if you know, throw in whether your volume numbers are for the shaped blank (common for software shaping dimensions) or finished board (laminates can add upwards of 10% to shaped blank volume).

My numbers come out to 98L but the board I'm on currently is 148L (Coreban Fusion)

I'll probably get something smaller next season but for now I like taking it easy and having fun.

Hope to demo some smaller boards over the Summer and see what I like.
