Don't know who built them . I know they were looking at Tiger Canoes  to make them hollow. I believe the ones they have been using in the past were foam core. I will find out and get back to you.

really? Tiger's a busy guy right now.  Most of his attention is focused on his 3-man rudderless, and has a joint project with Johnny Puakea producing Unlimited class 6 man outriggers. Especially with the Olamau coming up.  I've been told it's hard to even get a OC1 from the guy because his attention is elsewhere.

Years ago Tiger did produce Hollow Core unlimited SUP's for Hulakai.  Outrigger zone could be another source for hollow construction.  I know for a while they were making the Vortice for C4/boardworks.

Doesn't Travis ride for NSP now? I suppose they are allowing him to use a "NSP logo'd" x-brand board like conner?  I am not familiar with those names Marshall & Robello? can someone shed some light

Talked to someone out surfing Hawaii Kai who is Marshals good friend. He said Tiger is not doing their boards. Currently they are looking. I know Marshal had mentioned before they were looking into it.  He also said as far as he knows Travis is not doing solo on their board , however there is a rumor of a team with Travis on it. Don't know about that though.

SEA, are you still doing this year's race?  Training hard?  Got your nutrition and boat time dialed?  Tell us about that.  Who cares about Danny and Conner.

I am doing the race this year (3 man team)  getting my feet wet .. so to speak :). Don't know if I will subject myself to a solo at my age , but this will be a fun race for sure. I have been training hard doing a lot of leg work and paddling 3 to 4 times a week and  being VERY PALEO, whatever that means  :)  .

Tomorrow we are going going up into the channel about 15 miles from Oahu and my uncle , wife and my little girl will drop me and my friend of and follow us back to Portlock. It is going to be 25 mph and a steep rising tide should be one hell of a run. I plan to do this at least 4 more times before the race. I am charging up my go pro and my wife will be filming from the flying bridge of the boat so I hope to get some good footage of the channel tomorrow. Stay tuned !!

What Bill maybe next year ??? with all the Maliko runs you do, paddling 11 miles on a 3 man team would be duck soup !!! My two team mates are 61 and 64 years young !!

That's the plan. 2014.  I have a partner for two and will probably take on a third.  Haven't decided yet.  Grandson is here this year and I've got to get this ear deal settled anyway.

I was on a good roll but this vertigo deal is a set back, except weight is down to 180 after massive seat yesterday.  Did two light walks today and felt fine.  Easing back into it.  Don't want to paddle until I don't feel anything inside my head ... if you get my drift.  Sounded funny when I wrote it.  Didn't take any more of these drugs today that they gave me.  They were way strong.  Feel like I'm recovering from them more than anything else.

Confident on the water but having this motion deal in my head wouldn't play well on a boat and the boat is a big part of the equation.  Conditioning, boat, nutrition, hydration-electrolytes and a skipper that knows the course... all parts of the equation.

SEA, I like your idea of dropping out in the channel.  Nothing like having some experience in the spot, especially that last part to Oahu where it gets tricky with tide flow.  IMO that last 15 is where the race really starts.  I've been there in a boat and it can be a toilet bowl of slop.  Look forward to hearing about those runs.    Also like the sound of your team.  Yeah legs, it's all about the legs.

You ever have this feeling where your legs are doing their thing and everything is OK but you feel somehow disconnected from your legs?  Happens for me towards the end of runs... of course.

Hey Bill Glad you are doing well. That sucks the whole inner ear thing. My co worker had it so bad that all he could do was lye down on his side this went on for weeks. He went to see a neurologist at Queens hospital and this doc took a special machine with a little hose and tip and blew super chilled air right into his ear and it went away instantly !! First time I have heard of this .

Bill I went out 10 miles from hawaii Kai towards Kalua Koi Molokai. Your right the last 3 miles to kokohead was brutal The winds were about 20 mph and seas were about 6 feet . the waves were coming back out from Hanauma bay and  it was SLOPPY to say the least. It was the toughest paddling I have ever experienced .... there are swells coming from about 4 different directions . It is definitely good training for this race. My legs are sore today. When I do a Hawaii kai run i never get sore legs.  It was amazing how the conditions change so fast from mile to mile. on my Garmin my elevation went up to 16 feet and down to -6 so there was some moving ocean for sure. Id say leg work is key and I will be doing more of it. I hope to do a run next weekend again . I took my go pro but for got the anti fogging packets and it fogged up within 10 minutes into the run. could barely see. I have some footage from the beginning but I wish I had the slop by Koko head on film. I'll post soon.

Aloha

16-minus 6 is so radical.  You must have hit the dumping tide?  Check the tide chart with when you were out and tell me what it was doing.  Unfortunately I read somewhere that tide could be dumping on race day this year, sections where 2mph is doing good.  Maybe try a different approach next time you go and see what happens.

Whatever it is, psychologically it's good to know what to expect.  When you get Shanghaied with a surprise downer... it's tough.  Good work.

Ice Station Zebra for the ears?   Sounds wild.  I'll be checking into everything i can.

Tide was an hour and a half  into coming up when we started the run Bill , it was a big moving tide starting at 0 feet and ending at 2.2 feet i believe (i'm going by memory) , so it was optimal. My Avg speed for the 10 miles even with slop was 5.8 mph

My friend went way inside just past the entrance to Hanauma bay and hugged the wall all the way to port lock point (china walls) and he said he definitely felt the current and swells coming of off the cliffs at an angle sling shot him towards H.Kai .

When we escort others I notice some racers end up south of the rum line and come in towards  H.Kai from the outside and others try the line my friend took.

Race day is and will be a dumping tide :(  I'm not quite sure why race organizers decided not to chose the sunday before which is a tide exactly like the one we paddled last weekend ??  Makes no sense to me. It will make for a very hard race and much slower times I'm sure. Oh well it will still be a good experience i'm sure.

As you probably are already aware there is  a line that extends about 6 miles due west of Koko Head  that is defines an underwater ridge where the top is never under 500 feet.  But between .5 and 1 mile south of that underwater ridge, the depth drops another 1000 feet.

That's pretty rad and probably the cause of what we're talking about.   Is the fishing good there?

SEA... BTW 5.8 in slop is unreal.  So I guess that incoming tide is just as advantageous as the outgoing is detrimental

I agree with you about timing of event but as we all know the other 'on-land' logistics count more than on-the-water conditions.

As Mick Jagger sings, "to live in this town you must be tough, tough, tough, tough."

I'll be anticipating your reports....

My grandfather moved to portlock in 1938 , he was the second person to build a house there the first was Marshal Rosa's dad. They called that ledge Ernie Steiners Ono run . My grandfathers friend Ernie had that ledge dialed in and would catch a lot of Ono's on that ledge, so yah there is a lot of action fish wise and current wise . We have been fishing that channel since I was a boy. and right about 10 miles out on the rum line to Kalua Koi is a current line that usually runs from south west to north east or vice a versa . two years ago we were escorting a surf ski racer and there was a current line in that general area, it literally looked like a river with rapids about 100 yards wide running from north of Kaneohe towards south or penguin banks..... it was NUTS !!!  I kept thinking that if this was a standup race the racers would be toast !! As it was the surf ski's were getting tossed pretty good and it took some effort for them to get through that current. The biggest thing that strikes me about the channel is how fast conditions can change from cherry to hellish it's amazing.

I cant recall escorting any race with a dumping tide from the start ... I can only imagine what it might offer the racers this year. should be interesting.

The other thing I noticed is just because you have a rising tide definitely doees not mean you will get swift currents pushing you towards Oahu. You might catch certain areas where current lines will be moving towards Oahu however there are many that are going against you. It is almost impossible to pin down.  When I asked Racers  a few years ago what line will they be taking they said point A to Point B thats the fastest and all racers have to battle the same currents and winds  . Makes sense to me.

reading bumps out there is SO Different and you have to adjust constantly to the different conditions the ocean is throwing at you. Staying alert, focused and in the moment was very hard and I had to REALLY focus on focusing if you know what I mean. Any little stray thoughts or lack of total attention and you will  surely suffer. Talia Gangini was mentioning this in an interview  , now I know what she means .  I will be doing a run out there again hopefully in a few weeks. I might try a dumping tide to see what it throws at us. Not sure yet.

If anyone has done M20 race and has some wisdom to share please share , I would appreciate it

Aloha
