Fin recommendation for a tippy 12'6 race board
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:34:22 PM »
Recently picked up a C4 TGIF 12'6 x 28 to try racing/downwinding, but the board is very "roll-ey" & I've been losing some battles against rough water... especially side chop.

I'm thinking a new fin is in order.

Need to increase lateral stability, also better tracking would be nice.

I've read glowing reviews of both Gladiator & Ninja race fins, but not sure what the differences are between them...  any advice or recommendations out there?

Thanks!

PS stock fin is 10" long, classic "surf" center-fin looking shape.

Larry,
Would you have the same fin recommendation for a 12'6"x26" Starboard Surf Race in the same conditions?

Yes my friend same procedure, but if you need more stability on that board because of the volume then the Gladiator Hybrid would be the first call for you even in milder conditions. Mahalo,Larry

I've the same requirement for my 12'6.

Larry, can you go over the difference between the Hybrid and the Elite fin please.  I'm not doing any racing, more a combination of distance and a little downwinding.  Looking more for stability than out and out speed.  Also, where to buy?  Thanks.

Stability is extra volume in proper form added to the fin my friend. The Elite Gladiator has more volume than the Hybrid Gladiator which gives it a higher range of stability. 12'6" boards would be more likely to Run a Elite than a 14' Race board because of rocker on the 14s. Now with boards with narrow tails and low volume we offer the Gladiator Pro or with the unlimited boards running Ventral fin combos we also off the Mini Gladiator.

You can buy this fin at: Sup Gladiator Sight  http://www.supgladiator.com/

or Paddle Board Specialists Sight : http://www.paddleboardspecialists.com/products.asp?dept=163

or from me here by PM. I have Gladiator Elites in Route now to both above locations, I will person have more in 2 weeks.

Hope that helps my friend. Mahalo,Larry

My Surftech Bark Competitor gets REALLY stable with the Bat Wing. I use that one when i paddle 12'6" in very rough conditions and when I lend the board to someone who's never stood on a SUP before.
