Traction pad material- latest and greatest?
« on: May 01, 2013, 05:13:43 AM »
I'm looking for a good source of material, not a full pad, to make a mosaic. I'd like to get multiple colors (maybe 3). Closed cell foam a must and prefer 3M peel and stick. Ideas? Looking at hydroturf...any others?

I think Hydroturf is what I have on my L41 and it works great. Have you thought about cork?

Hey Bob - I don't see how you can go wrong with HydroTurf...  what kind of board are you padding? how many bags of 30pieces do you think you need?  I may wanna do something similar after I do the repairs on my Mana...  it seems like the "mosaic" pads gained a lot of momentum and then fell off the face of the earth....  I Like them....nothing fancy for me though

The NEW FCS pads (not the old stuff) or SeaDek/Xtrak are the latest and greatest.

Lots of options for color, thickness, texture, etc from NSI.

have fun!
Like the NSI options, but those pads seem pretty harsh on legs/arms  .....
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

How much work and how much versatility do you want?  With 3M #72 spray on PSA, you can make your own marine grade peal and stick whatever,  EVA foam from someone like canal  rubber in NYC with like 10 colour choices.

Spray back of foam, apply wax paper, cut to shape(get fancy and use a mat cutter) peel and apply

i think mosaic pad loss popularity is the amount of work/time it take to make it look good.  When i did mine, i randomly cut and stick my hydrotuf pad.  Doesnt look nice but by far the most grippest setup i been on.
as far as cork, i have been on it for over 6 months now, its on the bottom end of traction for traction pad.  But if you are low on dough and new traction pad, cork is almost free or cost about a cup of joe from your local cafe.  Im think about ripping out the cork and put some mosaic pad since i still have alot of hydrotuf left.

Stoney, I've got tons of scrap Hydro-turf, in multiple colors, peel and stick. I've been thinking about bagging and trying to sell, but from Maui the shipping would probably be prohibitive. If you want to pay the shipping I'll send you some, being Pono Bills bro and all, Bill's left enough of his money in my shop, maybe you will too next time you come to Maui(insert sales pitch here). Aloha, Dave

;D...thanks Dave, I appreciate the offer but I just went ahead and ordered some. My board should be ready shortly and I wanted to make sure I had it on hand when its done.

I have the hydroturf on my 9er and like it. Was thinking about going with the SeaDeck but I've used the xtrak before and it seems to get a little slick after lots of use. I have the xtrak on both my 12-6 and 14 where it works well because I'm not surfing hard on them.

Nicely done Tom...I like some of the artistically done mosaics and have even played around with designs but I don't really feel like spending THAT much time on it. This is also about max traction....I'm hoping to be really swing this puppy around. I got the small diamond hydroturf in dark blue and gray. Board is grayish blue on the bottom with a black pin stripe. I plan on cutting 4" (approx) diamonds matching the angle of the small diamonds in the pad. Thinking about something like this. Easy cutting and layout and will def give max traction.

Is all the Hydroturf stuff peel and stick, as in no contact cement required?

Order it with PSA on it...... pressure sensitive adhesive.
