What is your biggest surfing SUP?
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:19:08 PM »
Planning on making a couple of new boards, one small and one big.  I was wondering what your longest board is that you take into waves on a regular basis?  Not talking about downwinders here.  Also, what size waves do you ride it in?  Mahalo

I still have a 12'6 Starboard and a 11'6" Naish--fun to ride little stuff with. But really it's my 10'10" Foote that I use all the time. I just took delivery of a 9'9" X 34, that's still too big, and I have a SIMSUP 8'8" X 32 on the way.

I think my span of surfing boards will probably settle out at 10'10" to 8'6" and I surf everything from little calf high stuff to DOH and occasionally bigger when I have lapses of sense.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I was just checking out your 2 boards.  That 8-8 looks real thin.  I am curious to get the report on it after you try it out.

I have been wondering if it is helpful to have a longer board to get into bigger waves earlier or if I'm just asking for trouble when I get caught inside.

I have caught a couple of waves lately at a local spot here that is a heavy scarey fat lipped break in front of a cliff but I have yet to get caught and have only gone on small days.  But I wonder, do I want to get in early where you don't have to worry about getting pitched or do I want to go with a board that will be more manageable when I'm stuck inside and I need to, at a minimum, be able to hold my position until there is a pause in the sets?

Because you know at some point, it's going to get you.

I used to ride solid OH stuff on my Riviera 10'6. Really didn't know any different.

My Infinity Carver is 9'6 but I haven't ridden it in months.

So, the biggest board I actually surf is my Infinity TL which is 8'5x30.
Taller than most, shorter than others.

I enjoy taking a big longboard out sometimes. I have a 9x30 noserider, and actually am thinking of getting rid of it and grabbing a 9'6x28. I'll also take my 12'6x27.5 race board into the waves on occasion as well.

Have a 9'4" that I've kept for the "smaller, mushier" days, but find myself taking out an 8'5" and having fun with it in those conditions anyway......

Should have my 7'8"x 30" Corran Retro/Timsup on Monday, so the 9'4" may be a thing of the past all together.

Although the wife does like to paddle it around the harbor, so I think it's be around the house for awhile.....just a great all-around board.

I'll also take my 12'6x27.5 race board into the waves on occasion as well.
I've seen several others take the 12'6"s out in the surf, and they sure look like they're having a great time out there with them.

Will have to give it a go sometime.

10'6" Pearson Laird Surftech - my only SUP.

Surf it in everything - little ripples up to DOH.

I think the issue with size isn't so much the surfing
as getting out through the break.

With mushier waves, I'd take more volume and length.
Faster more powerful waves, maybe less, although it
hasn't been a problem.  Ditto the amount of white water
you have to go out through.

Takayama Ali'i II Surftech 11'x21.375”x28.5”x17.25”x 4.25,” 162 liters, 26 lbs, 3 boxes

This is the best surfing BIG board I've ever tried.
 Sic Maui 10 Recon.

Hard to believe it's 10'6" x 34" when you are on a wave.
Surfs a foot shorter than it is. with heaps of glide and as stable as the Whopper.
