14' board bag recommendation?
« on: April 08, 2013, 01:26:03 PM »
Looking for any feedback on bags for a 14' race board.  Looking at a couple different ones online and have a call into Midnight Products for a quote on a custom.  Anyone have the FCS bag?  Is it worth $280 for it?

Just curious what people have found to be the best?  I want the coffin walls with reflective material.  Thanks all.

I just purchased a 14' race bag from Vitamin Blue for my 2012 14' Naish Glide for $245 with the reflective material and handles on both ends plus an extra handle (near the handle placement on the board) and it was done in 3 days.  I requested a quote from Midnight for their "Roadtrip" model with reflective material, and it was quoted at about $330.  I haven't received it yet (it was shipped last Friday), but I can take photo's when I get it on the 10th.

Thanks Steve, very helpful.  The handle near the actual handle placement is definitely something I'd like.

Update, Midnight got back to me... $243 + shipping for a "silverback race coffin".  Problem is that their orders are currently 4 weeks out right now  :(

Looks like Vitamin Blue might be the winnah winnah chicken dinnah.

I've had a few Midnight bags and like them very much.  I recommend you ask for your fin slot to be on the flap side vs the side with coffin walls.  I believe it comes standard with the fin slot on the half with the coffin walls.  When I have the bag open on the ground I prefer to put my board deck down on the coffin side and then close the flap over the bottom and zip up tight.  Just my preference but it's worth thinking about.

This is a bag for the Speedboard, right?  That baby is worth protecting.  If you carry it on roof racks deck side down consider asking for double foam on that side.

XLR good idea, yes it's for the Speedboard.  It definitely needs a bag.  Double foam would be good.  Thanks for the tips.

I just got a Prolite 14 foot race board bag and it is top notch.  The best bag I have so I got one for the wife's race board too.  Shipping and cost of bags are high but very much worth it for protection.  They are heavy travel bags.  I check Midnight and they were about the same price and 5 weeks out and shipping was a killer too.

I thought about the Victory Core Dry slipon to protect form the sun but went full travel bag for our travels.

Md, where did you get the ProLite?  How much was it?  Is it a coffin wall bag?

The I have customer that I have directed to Vitamin Blue and they do an awesome job. I think the best bag out there is the Riviera bags. They did not miss any thing in this bag. Vents on both side of bag ( one at each end), handle at both ends and sides, one handle where your board handle is, zippered slot for your fin, Mesh interior bag for fin or leash. Very durable material.

The Riviera bags don't have mylar though do they?  Is that a deal breaker?  I don't plan on leaving my board outside in the bag often but I will want to take it to work and leave it on my car every now and then.  Would a bag without mylar add that much more heat or would the vents take care of that?

I too will be looking for a 14' bag, thanks for posting Kaya....I have a midnight bag for my Mana and in general it is pretty good.  I will say that some of the components are not of the quality that I was hoping for...

- shoulder strap and clips is pretty much worthless, low quality plastic clips that bend like crazy under the weight of the board....should be using metal clips
-I'm a little nervous about the zipper long term, (not YKK)....it has a few spots where it needs to go around a corner (for lack of a better term) and I can see that the zipper is "stretched" at those points..

I was also a little disappointed w/ the customer service going through the ordering process....  As was mentioned, the lead time is pretty substantial.  I told them that I was traveling in 4 weeks and needed the bag guaranteed to me before then....all I got was, "should be no problem, but we can't control UPS, so we can't guarantee it"....I offered to pay extra to rush the order to be sure and they couldn't do that.  I got the bag in time though.

In general, pretty good bag for the $, the board is well protected.  If I were to order from them again, I would definitely want a real shoulder strap and would like to see what they could do about the zipper design...

FCS tour/race bag is great.  I own two and they are serious protection with loads of features.
You can get them at Paddle Board specialists.
