Crack of dawn downwinder.
« on: March 12, 2013, 08:59:54 PM »
It seems like months since our last downwinder and today was looking good untill the latest forcast said the change was due around dawn.. JC, Paul and I decided to risk it because we were that desperate.. We met at the crack of dawn and the weather report on the news said the change was due at 8am.. It was now 7.20 and the DW run takes an hour.. We cut the run a little short and started at Elwood instead of St Kilda.. We had to side wind paddle out to the wind line and there wasn't much whence got out there.. Hardly a white cap to be seen.. But there was enough to catch some runners if you worked hard enough.. We were a couple of hundred meters from the end of the run when the change hit so the last little bit was into a side/head wind.. Oh well.. At least we got out downwinder in.. I ran ith two cameras.. The main one back and out wide to the left side and the other shorter and closer on the right side.. My plan was to mix up the views but for some reason the main camera SD card failed.. Bummer.. Here's some vid that I did get.

Thanks for sharing! Good to see  you guys charge even when the winds aren't ideal, still had some decent glides!

For me photography is all about lighting and this video had special lighting.  Loved it and the music.  The one shot with you dropping in next to Paul on the red board was great as well as the follow shot with Paul.  Loved the yellow leash.  Conditions were't as weak as your post led me to expect.  Pretty good.. at least good enough to put together a great vid.  Thanks.

That was great!

Completely understand feeling desperation to get out and get some glides. Thanks for the post.

Thanks Bill.. We are lucky to have the sun behind us on our DW runs.. Except early morning when it's off to the left side but not really in our eyes.

It's a shame that yours are mostly looking into the sun.. The glare must be hard on your eyes and make filming much harder.

I've been working on a new camera mount that will have a camera way out to the side.. on both sides.. and have no wobble or flex at all.. I should have it finished soon and it looks like we are starting to get some wind again... About time.

JC didn't have any gear with him so he used my old shape 14' Glide.. and he also used my new Larry Allison / Jeremy Riggs Aercor fin.. He said the fin was awesome.. I can't wait to try it myself.

Whenever I shoot from a jet ski the best shots are from the side... which is also side to the sun in our afternoons.  So that kind of mount you're describing sounds good for us.  But it's just amazing that you can ride DW with a long boom hanging out like that.  Check out the sunset glow at the end of the Kalama Fiji SUS video.  Stunning vid.  Say hi to JC for me.
