I don't think Hawaii has a pfd law for SUP paddling.  I know at one time, here in Hilo, there was talks about the long SUPs being vessels and therefore requiring a pfd.  Most paddlers in the islands just wear boardshorts, that's it! I don't even like wearing a rash guard, but I do so for visibility and sunscreen...sometimes ;)

There have been a handful of rescues off-shore of kayakers and SUPers, most tourist, but not all of them.  My friend who is a fireman on the Kohala coast said they rescued some paddlers on 14 foot Naish boards.  When the boat picks them up, the board is donated to the sea! I'd love to find a Naish Glide on my next adventure ;)

Hawaii waters can be pretty treacherous! Winds change all the time, so along with being physically in shape and mentally knowledgeable, I think it's also good to be prepared with the right safety equipment.  We always make sure someone has a cell phone without a passcode.

Hawaii is very laid back when it comes to ANY type of regulation, not just water. No restrictions is good... and bad

Missed a SUS session this morning but my good pal from Newcastle OZ came here on the Queen Elizabeth from Auckland NZ.  Picked them up at the harbor and drove to the top to get a look at you guys on the BI.  Looks like a little snow on top of Mauna Kea.

They're back on board with plenty PFDs but nothing to save them from a gnarly stomach virus flying around the ship.   He's just turned 60 and says he's the youngest onboard.

Hi there neighbor.  The winds have switched and the vog has rolled in.  I bet you can't see us today.  Looks like no Big Island downwind action this weekend.
