« on: February 03, 2013, 01:01:32 PM »
Can anyone give me an idea of where I can locate information on all SUP events in Interior BC this year?

My wife and I are hoping to plan a trip to one and I'm having trouble finding any info. at all.

Thanks!

Don't know about SUP events but my pals in Nelson tell me Kootenay Lake really blows hard at times.  Could be a great downwinder.

The "Second Annual Kootenay SUP Race" will be held in Castlegar/Robson on the Columbia river July 6. Last year around 30 racers showed up from Cranbrook to Vernon. I'm hoping to check it out this year, and the endless adventure paddling shop is going to be putting on another race on the Slocan river on August 26.

To touch on Headmount's comment, the Kootenay lake is simply an amazing place to paddle and I'm not just saying that because I live nearby:). It's already a well known expedition kayaking destination, and I can see the same thing happening for SUP. Two arms to the lake, with the smaller arm branching into Nelson.

The Kootenay Lake can get windy, and it gets big out there with very little warning. Not the most predictable lake. I have done a couple downwinders on the main lake. The wind can be tricky, but if you can time it right, it's a good time.

Tricky? as in direction, speed or both?  What is the most dominant direction?  What was your line on your DW runs?   Heard spring is best for wind.    I have a pal, Heath, who's a backcountry guide in the winter and quite a mt. bike enthusiast in the summer.  He's lives south of town and is getting into paddling.  Very fit guy.   If you're looking for a partner to go, find him.  The bike shops know him.

I'm not a DW specialist by any stretch, but there isn't a really consistent wind on Kootenay lake that blows at your back in a relatively straight direction.  At least not in my experience on the main lake which is a north-south orientation. The wind speed changes quickly at times and so can the direction it blows. The Nelson side of the lake has a more westerly orientation and the conditions may be more favourable for consistent DW conditions. I have only paddled on the West arm in calm flat water conditions. I have gone north on the main lake and had a decent run with the wind coming from the south at my back in late summer, and the shorter runs I have done were with the wind coming from a NE/NNE orientation, which means a more diagonal wind direction, and a lot more work staying on the swells and just getting out period. The lake is only around 5 kms wide, and less, so when the wind isn't blowing end to end, it's a lot of work to get a short run. It is windier in the spring in these parts. Thanks for the heads up on your buddy. I'm about 30 minutes from Nelson.
