Traveling w/ a KeNalu..
« on: January 15, 2013, 01:47:41 PM »
So here's what I'm thinking for traveling to Costa Rica this year for the first time w/ my KeNalu...  Since paddles don't match the rocker of the board very closely... in a board bag, it is exposed somewhat to taking a beating during the course of the trip.  I usually spend most of my packing time trying to protect the paddle...I am excited to take advantage of KeNalu's modular construction...I'm planning to disassemble everything.  The blade and handle can obviously be nestled anywhere and be fully protected.  With the shaft, I was thinking of getting a PVC pipe just about the same length and storing the shaft in there, maybe quickly taping up the ends to keep it inside.  Hopefully this will not only allow the shaft to fit more snug to the board inside the bag (cause it's now much shorter than the full paddle), but it will provide really good impact resistance for the shaft...  What do you guys think?

Sounds like it should work. I was thinking 2 things that may work better.

1. Use threaded ends to install removable caps on the pipe
2. Get a pipe with the diameter big enough to fit the shaft wrapped in pipe insulation

Check out the pipes in person, as they come in different wall thickness depending on pressure needed. Obviously the thicker wall makes for a stronger pipe.

Can't remember-will you need an international adaptor for your glue gun down there?

No international adapter needed.  They have regular outlets at 110

Your paddle will be fine as long as you have it in a bag. No need to take it apart. I travel with mine without any problems.

Sounds good...1 1/2" Sch. 40 PVC would do the trick nicely. I'd just glue on one cap and tape the other on. Cut the pipe a couple inches longer and stick some bubble wrap or even just newspaper in the ends.

I just got back from flying with my board and paddle and did the following, which worked great. I put the blade in a paddle cover, put the shaft in a length of foam pipe insulation (home depot), and placed a piece of foam at the shaft/paddle joint so that the paddle would lay flat. My board has plugs in the center deck of the board so I tied my paddle to them so it would stay in one place.
This way, if they stacked anything on top of my board & paddle, the paddle joint wouldn't be flexed.

double-check on the wife's hairdryer. If she has a high end one it won't get hot enough to melt glue. Cheap dyers that turn hair to straw are da kine.
