14 X35 cruiser?
« on: January 05, 2013, 09:00:21 AM »
I have a customer who is 7'2" and uses the fisherman @ 36 wide because it is stable for him. Anyone know of an extra wide touring board? Might be building him a custom, but curious on whats out there.

I haven't heard of any that wide at 14'.

The 14' River Rover from LPC is around 32" wide I think.

The 12'6" Jimmy Lewis Searcher is 33.5" wide and 363 litres.

I might be making him a custom but my blank is 30" wide.
I am going to try to add the extra foam from the nose section cuts  back to the mid ships to achieve the width needed. Not sure on how it will shape through the glue line.

Overall widest board I saw was a Hooked SUP at 36".  Others are that wide but it kept the width all the way back to a square tail.  It was under 12' though.  Maybe I saw it at your shop.

Dang, that's pretty tall.  I'm 6'5" 235 and have an Angulo Shaka XLT.  14'x30"x5.5".  It is amazingly stable at only 30 inches wide.  What's so great is that you get full advantage of that width as you can move your feet all the way to the rails if you like.  It's not a speedster in the flats, but it's not bad!

Starboard now makes the Touring board in a 12'6" x 32"
Ultra stable.

Or as already noted - the Jimmy Lewis Searcher.

Neither are 14's - but I have sold both to some really big dudes.

Might be easier to do a DIY blank from an EPS block. Make some plywood templates and hotwire it.  I doubt that a 14' with continuous rocker would need to be much more than 30" wide though. You gain a lot of secondary stability from rocker in a long board, as long as the nose and the tail float. If he needs to get comfortable on it you might add some training wheels for awhile--just some added pontoons like the goofy Carbonera thingies. But I bet he gets good and comfy on it very fast. At 14' X 30" it's gonna be pretty stable, especially if you keep the rails fairly straight and give it some volume in the tail--maybe a squash or square tail. Straight rails and a lot of float in the caboose makes for a stable board even if it's shorter. My 12'2" X 26" feels like a dock because of it's shape, though it takes a little while to get used to it.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I'd stay at 30", square the rails and a wide tail. Admins Foote Maliko was very stable at (I think) 28" and it had squared rails but not the wide tail.  I'm only 6-4 and was about 260 when I paddled it but I have lousy balance and it was very stable. Maybe take the Simmons inspired surf SUP's idea and translate it to a distance cruising board?

Not a production board, but a custom for a 7'2 guy:

How much does your guy weigh, and how is his fitness/balance? We have a 6'10 125kg guy in our local crew who goes very well on a stock 17' Naish Glide.

In theory, there should be no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is...
