He probably meant sea urchin (vana).  Canoe doesn't make make much sense does it?  PBills' Hawaiian language skills are still developing.

Well my doctor didn't believe me I had something in my foot but reluctantly cut me open anyway. Made a big hole in my foot and said it must have fallen out, there is nothing in there. I felt kind of stupid but it still hurt like hell.

Then 2 days later after I get out of the water look what was sticking out of my foot.

This was my second dislocation on my Sup . Took off on a sucky big wave and the paddle head got caught in the lip as it sucked over dislocating my arm across my back and breaking off the bottom part of the shoulder Socket. The surgeon removed another bone in the top of my shoulder and screwed back on to complete the socket as the original bone fragment was all smashed when it went back in plus I still had a 15 min paddle back through the surf which didn't help.

3 weeks after the op I sat in a chair at a restaurant and the leg snapped off , I landed point blank on the shoulder. The bone transplant held but it pulled the screw out 9mm. You can see the loose washer. Now at 8 weeks post op and seems fine and shoulder is remarkably good with about 80 % movement and confident I'll be back in the water in a week or two. The Surgeon is happy to leave the screw as is as long as I'm not getting pain but he wants to leave as is until fully healed and then pull it out.

Yikes!  My first time reading this thread and I guess I've been mostly lucky.  I have a bump on my nose from a time my board hit my face while surfing some sucky beachbreak waves in Hanalei, and I got some cracked ribs one time from my SUP t-boning me in the side as I got caught in the lip in howling winds one time at the Ranch.

Knock on wood...

Ole Ch-it, Rob... that is a nasty shoulder injury.  I sure hope you're right about "a week or two".  Thirty years from now, you will remember that day when you lay down at night.  Whew.

It's been four years and they are about the same. I DO however, say vana for urchin.

I doinked my shoulder doing an Artie Johnson Laugh-in style fall. But that was nuttin' compared to one of the other guys in our group who got off at high speed and did a forward roll onto his back with 53 feet of air (by the step method of measuring. Bruised spine, seven broken ribs and a punctured lung. Medevaced by helicopter to Bend Hospital and now resting semi-comfortably at home, trying not to laugh or sneeze.

I sneezed with three broken ribs once--I thought the world was ending.

Agree 100% with Pono.  If you want to punish someone for all their sins, give them a couple of cracked ribs and then wave a feather under their nose.
