If this thread has a winner, I'd vote for Deb's post. Wow! That is NOT gonna' buff out. Hope that is closed up and well on it's way to health again. Are the details of how that happened going to be shared??

He sent them to me already but I don't know if he wants them to be public and I'm not about to ask.    He's a little bummed right now.  Been a rough year with his heel and now this.

I saw Deb at Puamana a few days after the injury. Didn't look all that bad once it was stuck back together, but boy, that was pretty major league.

Seeing this fin carnage only reinforces my decision a dozen years ago to use only Surfco Hawaii Proteck fins, which have rubber edges. I was talking to a lifeguard on a crowded surfing beach one day and he told me some sickening fin wound stories. I then put Protecks on my surfboards, and when I took up SUS a couple of years ago my first accessory purchase was a Proteck longboard single fin; I also use Proteck sidebites occasionally. I'm still not very experienced at SUS, but to me the Protecks work just fine, even in good surf. A couple of weeks ago I got rolled in the shorebreak and sat down hard on the fin, close to a tender area. Tore my wetsuit, but not a scratch on me.

I guess I have to add a disclaimer of any commercial interest.

It's all good.  I've heard about my long toes my for as long as I can remember.  When your big toe is as long as your thumb, knuckle to knuckle, it stands to reason that they will attract some attention.

Re: Proteck Fins - I also swap out stock fins for the protecks.  They definitely add peace of mind and don't sacrifice any significant performance that my novice self can tell.

Summer of 2011, I was goofing around on my board and stepped on the carry handle as the white water passed underneath.  My toes separated and literally split apart requiring nine stitches between my 3rd and 4th toe.  I wish I had taken a photo before being stitched up - it was pretty crazy looking - lots of sinewy looking bits.  Pain wasn't too bad as I missed the nerve bundle (or whatever its called) and didn't break anything.

Whoa! Those definitely look like fingers!
I was going to say that, but I didn't want to embarrass the guy, but now that you mention it.
Hopefully his girlfriend or wife is into feet,,,,,,, not that there is anything wrong with that, and the online name is perfect.

I did hesitate posting the pic, but figured you're all brave .... I was terrified at first - thought I may have cut an artery. Wish I could say something exciting like Pier One or Kanaha, but no, it was a waist/chest jack-up over-the-falls at Ukumehame. Used the leash as a tourniquet. My husband, Trip, swam me in and there just happened to be an EMT and male nurse at the beach, so they took wonderful care of me until the ambulance arrived. Healing slowly (any suggestions for healing faster are most welcome!). When it's closed I'll go for PT. Definitely taking off those fins. GL version 2 are great fins, but .... I'm used to a quad set-up, I'll see if Proteck makes some.

Alright you want it... here it is...

Test Driving a Naish Hokkua 8'5".

Caught a M7 side bite in the thigh.

Penetrated my Wetsuit then got caught in my compression shorts.
I was trying to hold the board up so it wouldn't point into the sand.
There was enough pressure to pop the skin then slit all the way around
the inner thigh.

My kids said it looks like fatty Corned Beef...

Funny how we're all mush inside wrapped in this skin like some kind of sausage just waiting to spill out when it splits open.  And then we play on top of boards with stilettos lurking underneath like Friday the 13th  Freddy.  How am I going to sleep tonight?  This thread is horror movie I can't resist looking at.

So Cal,

I can't compete with this sh*t... apparently I have passed the torch to Ralph, or rather, he ripped it out of my hands with the flapping skin of his bleeding thigh!
