Reinforced fin boxes

Do all boards have reinforced fin boxes? If not which ones do and does it make much of a difference?

Are there different styles of reinforced fin boxes?

 They had better be!!! The Exocets are Cobra-made - with their fin boxes housed in a super hi-density pvc foam cassette (as are the mast base inserts and handles). Then these cassettes literally i-beam to the deck and bottom of the board's lamination process ensuring a strong bond. Should bust the fin off before blowing the box. This type of construction has been the norm for years on windsurf boards. One reason why the older windsurf companies make such strong, light-weight stand-up boards. They've simply been doing them for such longer times...     Paddle on;   JD

Starboard uses the same construction and when my fin smashed into some deadwood this summer one fin tab broke and the other tore out the FCS plug. That said, because of the closed cell PVC foam insert, repair was as simple as leaving it in the sun to dry the rest of the day, cleaning the plug hole out, setting a new plug into some thickened epoxy, couple optional layers of glass on top of that to keep the plug in better next time and then whatever finishing you want to do to make it pretty.

Wow DW, I thought this was an open forum not a judge and jury......I'm brand new to the sport and am trying to understand it and the construction of boards better. Just because I ride a JL board it doesn't mean I'm looking for any specific answer, just responses that are genuine and informative.

You can keep opinions like that to yourself thanks.

The fin in a race or touring board exerts so little force on the box. There is no need for reinforcement unless you hit something or set it down on the fin and your dog uses your JL as a play structure. Surf models need extra help in reinforcement.
 Windsurfers made special boxes that went up through to the deck and Cobra is  wear most of the sailboards were made. Cobra now uses the same reinforcement pioneered in windsurfing is used on better made SUPs.
You can pay a little more and have beefed up at the factory or pay later to have it put back in .
