Surfer Magazine Observation
« on: December 05, 2012, 06:07:24 PM »
I was killing some time at the grocery store today while my wife shopped... picked up a Surfer Magazine and thumbed through...

First, zero ads for SUP (which is totally ok with me, their right) but they do have ads for Wave Jet Propulsion surfboards... I find this a bit comical; promote a battery powered machine that does the work for you, but not a human powered paddle board (-:

Second, an article about Kai Lenny, but the only picture they print is him on a prone surfboard.

Third, an article about Joe Barks son, possibly one of the biggest pioneers of our sport.

Just found it amusing.

Then came home and watched this video about Gerry Lopez who always puts things in perspective for me...

You know the thing is that Gerry probably deserves to have an attitude more than just about anyone in the surf world and yet he seems like the most down to earth and grateful guy in the world.  In many respects, it seems to me that he is the perfect example that good things happen to good people.

Gerry and Jake Burton are very similar.  The most "normal" people you could ever meet.
Easy Rider is the name of my store in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
My name is Warren Currie . . . and we SUP Surf indoors . . . in a shopping mall!

Thanks G-dane
Great clip!!!
I keep a vid of Gerry, talking SUP, on my Iphone...
Gerry is the epitome of "Stoke" to me.... SUP, Surf, Snowboard, Yoga...Life.
Gracious, great-full and humble... he realizes' how fortunate he is to know this happiness.

Just in case a few Zoners are not aware of this little piece of trivia:
Gerry Lopez also played Subotal in "Conan the Barbarian"

He's a true giant and legend...
who is stoked that he got a  SUP River Paddle "Meet-up" going ;D

Have to read his book,..A MUST... ''Surf is where you find it''.. Great stories from his adventures and life  surfing.. Always enjoyed reading his articles in the various surf/ SUP  publications.. My all time favorite Surfer. When I started surfing in 1975 , always had surf posters on the wall ..Gerry's classic  ''Pipeline Barrel'' on the Red Coral Cruiser Bolt  was the treasured image for many years..   Thanks Gerry for fueling my Surf and SUP stoke..

Surfer Mag is like a living version of the Russian from Rocky IV. Just a robot.
Taller than most, shorter than others.

the mag sucks anyway. if any of these mags were smart they'd add some sup salles would increase 80% easy. how about a mag with just  all wave ridding... surf, long board,  body, boogie, skim. at all good and guys are ripping at all of them!

Well Mitch in San Diego couldn't get all of them when Clark was forced to close their doors, Gerry obviously bought a big truck load himself, probably got a real good deal on them.
It takes a quiver to do that.

I don't know about the ret of you but Gerry Lopez has always been my greatest inspiration. The things he says so much align with my own thoughts, i had the rare treat to surf with him one time. You couldn't ask for a better time in the water.
