Paddle for my son?
« on: December 03, 2012, 09:35:30 AM »
Hello! I am about to buy my son a paddle but I am not sure what to buy. Do you have any suggestions for a good vario SUP paddle? Please help! His reach is about 165 cm/67"

Many thanks

I had QB make a custom carbon PINK paddle for my daughter 2 years ago. It's adjustable and light. The price was fair! At the time 2 years ago most adjustable paddles appeared to be heavy and unfair torture. We also use the paddle for guests.

Any alloy paddle is waaaaay too heavy to be any fun. Maybe a Naish Keiki 7'0 vario RDS? You could find one easily through Fahlén. The Quickblade paddles are light and nice but their vario system is cheap, has a fair amount of play in it and the increments are too large. Fail.

Every junior paddle I've seen so far (and every woman specific paddle too) id heavier than the senior paddles. It should be the other way around. The forces are smaller and thus you can get away with weaker materials. But companies build them bombproof, cheap and short. That's no way to recruit young suppers!

Naish has paddles for young people if I remember correct. Have you checked?

Ok. I will check with the Swedish importer of Naish stuff. I had a feeling that I would end up there. Seems like the Keiki is easiest one to get here in Sweden.

Thanks!

Henrik, I bought a Naish Keiki 7-0 for my 7 year old. made a huge difference compared to the 500:- Kr one that he had first. the blade on that thing is total crap, but works ok when his friends take a test run with him.

Keiki is the ticket.

RRD supposedly make a light junior paddle too but Surfers are out of stock and it's unsure if and when they get more. Haven't seen them live. The Keiki is the best I've seen and the vario system is great. Same as in the senior paddles.

Not sure how old he is, but I just saw an adjustable paddle by Riviera at my local shop that was many for little guys/ gals.  Small blade and pretty light as well.

Riviera is not sold in Sweden so it is easier to get Naish. But the Sprout looked good.

I'll will try to get a Keiki. Their vario system looks good too.

lots of options for kids.  Anything adjustable will work fine... as far as it being light weight, well lightness is expensive plain and simple.

Yes, lower weight costs more. I was thinking about getting him a Ke Nalu but I'll start with a Naish Keihi. If he likes paddling as much as I do I will buy him a Wiki with an adjustable ergo-T handle.

True about price/weight but using the same dimension alloy and blade material in jr paddles is cheap defeating sensible. How would you like to paddle with a 10lb paddle?
Same with heavy junior boards. My five year old girl paddles with a light rubber dinghy paddle from the gas station, 6 dollars :-) and the board is a soft deck 7'0 prone surfing board bought for 150 dollars new. One third of the weight of a kid sup. As she grows, I'll update her to a 9'0 softdeck and a Naish Keiki RDS.

Hmm... The board yes. I am going to let him use my big Surftech Bark Competitor. He is ten years old and that board is not very tippy. Maybe he cannot manouevre it as well as with a smaller board but I hope it will work out ok. Perhaps some railtape :)

The adjustable Kialoa Hapa are both great and guests could use it. They're a little heavier, but will last just about forever.
