Which epoxy for a Kialoa handle?
« on: November 20, 2012, 05:32:10 PM »
What's the best epoxy for gluing a Kialoa handle? I recently picked up a Methane off the classified section and need to shorten it.

Thanks!

I buy the 2 part overnight stuff from Ace hardware (not the 5 min).  It comes in a syringe-like applicator.  I've done a bunch of paddles and board repairs w/ it and have never had an issue...I think it's from Devcon or something like that.  Costs about $5 and will do a few paddles and board repairs...stores well

5 minute epoxy will work fine. But if you foresee cutting the shaft more than once then get the heavy duty hot melt glue (yellow) from Ace. Thanks to Pono Bill this is all I haved used. I have used it on Kialoa's, Quickblades, KeNalu's and many other brands with great success.

The Kialoa does not work with  hot glue. The small surface area is not enough for it to hold. Use at least 2hr or the overnight epoxy. Put the epoxy in the handle and on the shaft for best hold.

And tape the handle on with some masking tape while it cures... something about the epoxys chem-reaction makes the handle want to pop off during the process.

It's probably the heat. It expands the air inside the paddle, forcing the handle out.

Yes - always put some masking tape over the handle to hold it on - and straight.
Helps in case someone bumps it before it is dry.

I agree hot melt does not work.  I used poly urethane glue.  Bonds with the foam in the handle.  Rough up the shaft as you would with epoxy.  I just happened to have some in the garage and it worked well.

Parts subject to torque need to be designed specifically for hot glue for it to be effective. The Ke Nalu joint is more like a figure eight inside a circle. The dips on the sides make ramps of glue that resist torque. Most other manufacturer's parts are circles inside circles. No dips. You might get away with that for a handle, but don't try it with a blade that has a "frog" external connection. These designs need strong glue to reinforce the joint. The Ke Nalu ferrule construction makes it possible to reinforce the inside of the joint so no added glue strength is required.

I used the same 2 part stuff, on my methance,  that CT' got from ACE.

Keep the caps on and you'll get several applications out of it.

One thing I did was apply a second coat around the joint by dapping it on and slowly spinning it to get an even coat.

I use Devcon 2 part 5 minute epoxy for all my handle glue ons, and have done well over 100 in the last 2 years with no fails that I know of, at least half of which were Kialoas.  Try and get the individual small bottles rather than the connected syringe, as the stuff seems to ooze out when its not in use and gets messy fast.  To get the right ratio, just draw 2 quarter sized circles on a piece of cardboard, fill one with the hardener and the other with the epoxy and mix with a toothpick.  Paddle is ready for use in 10 minutes.
