Turkey day paddle in Portland (LO to OC)
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:36:27 AM »
Starting to plan a morning paddle on Thanksgiving. Thinking of George Rodgers to Oregon City and back. Welcoming all and ideas as well.

It sounds fun but I'll be out the gorge feasting.

Sounds good to me.  Now I just have to decide whether I'll actually put my board on my car and drive to the start, or just paddle down from the park here and meet you.  Javelin has never been on a vehicle since I got it, including the walk home from your shop.   And I'm not going to go up Willamette Falls, although if anyone wants to go down them I'll take some photos.

Some amazing rain last night,  yes it rains in Portland. River went from 40,000 to just under 100,000 fps.
Will be looking at the current for options on the turkey paddle.

I put up a new gutter on my carport a few days ago, but didn't get the downspout attached, so I stuck a 20-gallon garbage can under it to catch the water.  I had to empty it 3 times in a few hours yesterday.  So 60 gallons of water off a one-car carport roof.  And the gutter's not done, either, so was only capturing part of the roof runoff.

I'll be attempting to paddle somewhere coastal. Although 30 knot winds may say otherwise. And may be be right.

Now the Willamette is over 128,000 fps . Going up to the falls not an option. Speed runs down current are an option, or just paddle in place at 5 mph.

There's always Ross Island.  Half the paddle is always easy.  River sure looks brown and murky today.

Checked out George Rogers today but the rapids  made Mike and I check out other parks and spots and finally have a nice paddle around Ross Island. Played the eddy lines and worked the GPS to hide from the current. One  serious rip off Toe Island took Mike for a dip but other wise a great day for a paddle.

Crowded though--two boats and a kayak.  I did enjoy going over 7 mph without any effort going downstream--upstream slightly different story.

Must have been tough going upriver.  I was walking with the current along the shore today, and got overtaken by a tandem kayak.  They weren't even paddling.
