Well, SL is a wanted man at Salt Creek.
That MUST be the best spot.

When its big? Blacks Beach, two hundred yards north of the goat trail. You'll be the only competition. Nearly impossible to catch the bigger waves on a normal surfboard. But the inside is a meat grinder.

My alternate spot is La Jolla shores, especially during a rainstorm. Mt Soledad blocks the south wind and gives a side-offshore groom to the winter swell. Furthermore, in a 300 hundred yard span from Scripps pier to the south, the wave height can vary six feet, so it's an easy paddle out and then turn and burn northward.

:)

Lot's of food for thought there.  Appreciate it.
Where do you put in to get out at big north-of-north-Black's when it's big?

Another hundred yards north, it gets mellow. That's where I was supping over the Labor Day weekend swell. Yes, true Blacks is better, but I like being the only one out sometimes. And I always wanted to see how the wave would be on a stand-up...phenomenal!

(Not to mention the strange looks and comments from the people coming up the trail.). :)

And your wardrobe.

Carrying up a SUP from Black's would suck, for me at least, after a session.  Who's got an infamous key?

BTW Who here works in Nautilus 3 Building?  I work in Nautilus 4.

It's not bad when your board is made with carbon fiber and weighs 13lbs.
And you needn't pack surf shorts. :)

Sacrifice, its worth it. Or, you can park at Torrey Pines and paddle two miles south.

Geez sweeper
the access to Black's must have improved
I remember climbing up with the rope in one hand... board in the other... No SUP access then.
going down was a death defying ridge run :-\
but worth it ;)

13 lbs :o

Or Scripps and paddle 1.95 miles North ;)

From TP, I've walked to the Rock (I forgot what they call it, Flat rock or something) and fished, but never went passed it...How far from there?  I've also walked from Scripps too.

I work at the top by John Hopkins Road.  Right between the Shores and TP.

It was mid 70's
Didn't do it often cuz of the hassle
I just remember we could only access from the south side of TP.

There were terrifyingly narrow ridges with shear drops off both sides that you had to navigate.
Coming up there was an easier way, but it was up a nearly vertical wall that had a knotted rope fixed above it. Up was easier than down on the rope.

I seem to remember that UCSD had road access, but it was private.

Never thought about walking from Scripps ??? don't know why.

Blacks was an official Town "clothing optional" beach then... is it still? :o
I felt like an idiot walking by in my wetsuit ::)

The 1st pic is where we (me and my doggie) headed down from... yeah, he was stoked...
2nd shows how steep it was from the top... the ridges were eroded cliffs just south of #2

Lots of good time in SoCal... you guys are livin' the dream  :D

Yes there is an access road and a little parking lot.  You can go through, but the infamous key gets you parking access. I don't have a 13lbs board to schlep back up the hill. Heck I had long sand beaches after sessions.

There seems to be a lot of people with boards at glider port though I've never taken that way...

I havent' surfed Blacks since the late 80s early 90s.

Mushroom Hut still functional?

How long does it take to paddle an 8'0 two miles? ???
Taller than most, shorter than others.

Hey I may park there, but you'll see me SUS'g at the military spot. It was fun today..... Seeing that my local spot is between DP and Doho, I put in a vote.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

45 mins or so.
There's waves to catch along the way.
It was quicker when I had the 10'0".
On smaller days, paddling down to flat rock is enough fun. Bigger days, just park at the glider port and trek down the hill. :)
