Help needed for 9'6 design
« on: May 07, 2008, 02:23:48 AM »
I want to make a 9'6 board for surfing only.I am 90kg and have been riding a 10'6 x29'x4' for the past 12 months.

I have foam blankwithout a rocker so I have to  cut the rocker before shaping can take place.

My problem is I know I need tail lift for turning on the wave and I need nose lift to assist in takeoff but how much is the question and where do you measure these points from.I have read some posts here and 4.5 ' of tail lift seems popular.

I also want to move the fins up  so they are more efficent in the water.Im going to make a  2  plus 1 setup
Any advice would be great as I want to make
a board that is actually fun to surf on and can turn sharply in the surf.

I am thinking of a swallow tail this time over the square tail , any comments?.
Any other help or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Wazza

If you have a billet of foam, you might want to download the akushaper program from the aps3000 site. From there, create your foil in the profile section and then you can print that profile template out. Transfer it to wood (make 2) and hot wire out your foil. Its cleaner and more precise. Unless your amazing with a planer, its gonna be rough cutting out your foil from block...

Sounds like your building your board from scratch!.....I think thats wonderful :)

I also build SUP boards from blocks for material (EPS) left behind from construction companys. Heres a board that I built from scrap foam I found on a jobsite back in January. It's on this forum. Also you can see the finish product also under the heading...."Home Depot Sam Pa'e" in the shape shack forum.

If you need help making a hot wire cut, I'll be glad to help!!....I have also made the hot wire cutter from contruction materials.

Yeah thats correct, making it from scratch so that I can have the board that  I want.
I would appreciate any help/tips Sam from your experiences. How did you make your hotwire cutter.
I am thinking that I need to put a stinger in.....or a glue join.
Have you finished the above mentioned board and did you glass it youself?
How does it surf?
Cheers

Sam,
I ended up shaping a 9'6 rounded pin.

I used a higher grade foam and no stringer.Glassed the board this week with 3 6 ounce layers on the deck and 2 on the bottom.

Am still undecided about exact fin placements as i want a thruster setup .
I still will move the fins up more than normal so i can turn it better.

Any suggestions as to fins placements??

Congratulation.........Did you cut out a rocker template and hot wire this board ALL yourself? Got any pic?

I'm NO expert on fin placement. What I do is look a board that appeals to me, take the measurements, and install.....Hell if it don't work....Try again! So far I've been successful.

Maybe some TOP sharpers in this forum (like BLAIR CHAMBERLAN) can help you out.....

ATTENTION ALL "ZONERS". CAN YOU HELP THIS FELLOW ZONER OUT.
