Board Storage in Apartment
« on: September 17, 2012, 08:49:21 AM »
Hey All,

I was just curious if anyone had any good board storage tips/ideas/suggestions for tiny apartment dwellers such as myself.

I just added a 14' to go along with my 11'6", and well, I have no idea how to store them in my apartment, other then lying them against the wall, which is making my pad a bit cramped.

If anyone has any wall hanging or other storage suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

About the only ways I can think of is either hanging them from the ceiling or if your complex has enclosed parking garages for each tenant then maybe keep the boards in there.  Otherwise the only other option I can think of is paying for storage.  I personally am going the inflatable route.

Keep em lying against the wall but move your couch or love seat in front of them, it hides them a bit and keeps them out of the way. Other than that you'd need a rack for your ceiling as surf4food mentioned, maybe in a long hallway.

I Like this setup I have in my garage. I bought some T- Shaped hangers from Home Depot. I hacksawed  off the nubs on the end so I could slide aluminum electrical conduit pipe over it to make it extend. I used 2 self tapping screws in each pipe to attach it securely to the hanger T. I wrapped it with pipe insulation and wrapped the very ends with electrical tape.

You have to screw it directly into a joist, make sure you do it correctly or it could be an expensive mistake if your board falls. You can simply fill in the holes when you take the unit down.

I carry 1 board on each side, plus paddle, plus my daughters surfboard on top of my yellow SUP. About $35.

We live in a 700 sq ft condo.  When we first started, we just had two boards, so I installed a two board rack high up over our entertainment center.  This worked out fine until the bug really bit us and the next thing we knew, we had 7 boards.  So, on the opposite side of the room, I built a PVC rack that we could store the board on their sides behind the couch... which of course shoved the couch about 4 feet out of the wall.  And of course, any time we needed one of those boards, if the two of use where home to get them out, then the single person doing it was knocking over a lamp or something.  We finally re-configured the layout of our living room and made it more like an Ikea showroom.  It took awhile to get used to the layout, but we were able to put all the boards on one wall with a straight shot out the door.  Luckily, we're on the first floor, so it's a straight shot all the way to the car parked on the curb.

We have a funky build here, so our drywall is less than an inch off of the concrete wall behind it so it took awhile to get the right anchors.  I found some that don't need to go in so deep and they claim to be able to hold about 100lbs.  So, I put six of them in thru a 2 x 3 and really zipped them into the wall.  Then I bolted the racks into the 2 x 3's.  It's been holding up 6 boards very nicely and has made it so much easier to grab any board we want to take out except the 7th (a prone) which is now stored at a friend's house that uses it more than we do anyway.
