Does anyone use a handheld GPS? The prone paddleboard racers I know do & I'd think it would be a good training tool for SUP as well.

i picked one up the other day and im having a blast recording all of my runs.  its a garmin 305 with the heart rate monitor thing.  now i can actually measure my runs and get accurate times.

today i did a 3 mile sprint from kaimana beach to ala moana.  the water was pretty flat and there was 5-10mph sidewinds that would sometimes turn into headwinds with occasional 15mph gusts.  the 3 mile sprint took me a little over 35 minutes on a vortice xp.  with some catchable bumps and some sort of tailwind, i think i could do under 30mins easily.

the garmin line of personal gps's are awesome.  when you upload to your computer, it will also show your paddle route.  a must if you plan on logging your times and paddles accurately.

i'm using a garmin 530 hcx. it works great to know how fast you've gone, or are going, telling you where you're at and with blue chart you'll know what land formations are beneith you.

serves multiple purposes too as it has a gmrs/frs two way radio built in.

I am having fun paddling with purpose.  I'll surf then do the paddle.  Another surf friend and ex fishing captain suggested we not do the offshore paddle.  He said he witnessed a seal lion attack by mussel rock by  a huge whitey.  It all adds to the excitement I guess and if we have 30 racers, it kinda reminds me of the story of the troll and the billy goat.

Is there a special type of paddle for distance and speed?  So far I have been using my werner, but maybe a bigger blade could help or burn you out quicker.

I also have a garmin wrist gps that I will start to wear for accurate speed and distance. It is a garmin foretrex 201.

This is so fun and this tread inspires me to do more.  You guys rock.  I will try to up my paddle to 5 miles.
