heheheh... sorry, don't mean to be such a stroke.

anyway i've been toying with a technique to snap the paddle out of the water by twisting the handle (and the top of the shaft)  inwards (towards me) because the angular change causes the blade to squirt right out of the water.  doing so also sets the blade in a more aerodynamic position to be moved from the follow through to the catch of the next stroke.

this might be more useful for heavy hitters using wood or aluminum as the added weight is something we contend with.

bad technique can cause a (elbow) jerk reaction which may cause or exacerbate a present injury.

also please let me know if this has been discussed before as it only seems natural in ergonomic terms anyway.

next topic: i slept with my uli and my wife found out.

Well i've heard about Brain Chamberlain (the saddle purfer) but I don't know John Holmes... Who is he?  ???
Hey Shifter! ilke to paddle that way or even sometimes the paddle stay in the water (hydrodynamic position) for a better leanning when it gets tippy.

You'll have to dig into your older collection of porn flicks to find out, I might be wrong, but I think he's dead now,,,,,,,,,, probably from terminal paddle envy.  :'(
It takes a quiver to do that.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe he popularized the modern wood paddle, but with a shaft that was much too thick to be practical for most applications.    :o

Back on topic, somewhat: On a tip from a fellow paddler, when paddling into strong headwinds I've been angling the blade horizontally rather that vertically when bringing it forward.  I find it really helps cut down on wind resistance.  I'm guessing that paddlers have been doing this all along and I'm just the last to discover it, but it was a revelation to me.   :-[

I played around for a while doing that....(The paddle thing)...I also found that with your top hand just as you finish the stroke if you twist your thumb slightly towards you the paddle pop's out of the water.

I don't do it any more and don't think it's such a good idea..but that's just me...My new Kialoa paddle is so light it seems to pop out of the water by itself anyway.

We do this technique all the time. It really helps when trying to catch BIG waves at Makaha.

(Especially when needing to start and get momentum.) Need some getting used to.

OK....I'll stay serious....although DJ deserved that for getting me stuck with my new moniker.....what are friends for though.

I'll have to give that twist a try. One thing I need to add is some finesse to my game. So far its been all power and persistence. Its worked but I'm sure its not pretty. I also need to think about efficiency. All the talk about racing and the training I've been doing for the challenge has me amped to give it a try. Seems like efficiency is the name of the game there. Wish I had some good folks around here to emulate.

Some of you distance guys or girls should put together a training/techniques video. I'd  buy it!

okay then, thanks for all the replies. it's kind of a relief to know that it's only normal. not something to do all of the time, i guess, or it may just become a habbit.
