Yes mine is, when carrying the board I believe it is tail heavy..at first I thought it was the replacement fins or possibly water from a leak, but it's definitely the balance of the board due to the placement of the handle.  Still for as well as it surfs, I'll accept a little inconvenience walking to water

I have to traverse steep cliffs where I surf so the deck handle not being balanced is a major inconvenience. It bugs me so much that I might put a new handle in.

ha ha... I know those cliffs... not fun!
Put in a Blue Planet SUP grip Handle, they look awesome and seem really straight forward to install.

Hey Magentawave, does your Hobie have 2 deck plugs on either side of the handle?  Mine did and I think they were there to either attach a shoulder strap or to attach cords to tie to the paddle and use the paddle as the handle...might be an option for you it you have them

Did you used to live in So Cal, Creek?

No it doesn't but my first surf sup did and I sure liked carrying my board with the paddle. (I was always a little nervous about going over the falls with my toe wrapped around one of those loops though.)

So, anyone that's ridden the Sunova Flow and the Hobie CM Pro, comparisons? I really like the build of the Sunovas (the one I've seen) but it's hard to spend that much on a board I've never tried out. Looking at 8'7" Flow versus 8'10" Hobie CM Pro.

Magenta:
I lived in Cardiff, Encinitas and Leucadia 73-75
Bartended at the Fish House West and worked at some skateboard factory
Surfed From Quatro Casa to Santa Barbara
Mostly Swamis, Seaside and Blacks... but went South of the border on weekdays for empty sessions with frinds

Some pics of my dog and I at the cliffs and some K39 from the days before condos covered the Baja coast and you slept in your car :)
Plus a nice Wind n Sea flashback

Very cool photos, creek. Thanks.

Those were the days...   cheap gas, simple and easy to fix (and jury rig) motors, and free and easy in Baja. We referred to Corona's back then as "that Mexican beer with the painted on label." I surfed K38 before the condos too and caught PERFECT chest to head-high San Miguel on a Saturday afternoon with just myself and three friends out. It's still another world south of Ensenada...

I need to fix a couple dings on my Hobie. It's the non-RAW model painted with white paint with a tad of light blue in it. Does anyone know the name of an off-the-shelf paint in a spray can that will match that?

reviving this thread since I'm eyeing a used 9'4 CM Raw and have a few questions regarding some of the comments here...

There are so many iterations of this board, I'm having a tough time figuring out if this is one of the good ones or not. It has the full spider web kevlar thing going on with some red and blue coloration scattered throughout that netting. It is numbered #218269. It also looks to have those two plugs above and below the handle for a paddle strap (or whatever).

If you have any input to clue me as in to whether this is one of the super awesome versions or one of the "prone to dings and depressions" models that'd be helpful!

here are some pics:

I can't say for sure about this one, but most of the Hobie CM Raw I saw with the spiderweb carbon were pretty fragile, in some cases just crap.  I believe the worst ones were made under license somewhere in Florida.  See if you can find out where this was made.

My Hobie Raw was hand shaped in California  with only carbon rails and stringer and is bomb proof.

Either way' I'd recommend glassing in or removing completely those two strap thingies on either side of the handle..prone to leak as mine did and had to have deck redone.

Thanks! That's exactly what I'm nervous about but am unsure of how to figure out if this was made in CA (good) or FL (bad). Does the number tell us anything? Or the purchase date? Do we know when things moved to FL?

Hard to tell, maybe you could contact Hobie with that serial # to find out more information?

Maybe a local surf shop can share info?  I believe Cinnamon Rainbows in hampton Beach, NH is a Hobie dealer...

Hi Slider,

I would imagine that if it is still looking good  after all these years then the construction is probably pretty good.

There's something more important than construction quality.... where as I found the 8'11 I had to be amazingly good, there is the issue that Marc redesigned the Raw in the later version.
Mine had a VERY concave'd and pointy nose...... it was fantastic!
But not big enough for me in winter gear, so I bought a new 9'4 RAW.

I saw that the nose was wider and there was no real concave at all.
When I asked the shop they said the Marc had updated the design.

I took it straight across the street and hit the 5' glassy perfection with great anticipation.
First wave, went to turn and fell flat on my face. Then again. I couldn't surf that board.
I went out a few more times and found it to be nothing like the original version.

Being a broke ass surf bum, I needed to sell it and get a board that worked, so I took a bath on it and gave away a brand new board for $750 loss after 5 sessions.

The one in the pics has the dims on it... mine never had volume listed on it, so I suspect that is the newer shape, although it's hard to tell from the pic.
Check to see if it has the deep concave in the nose.... if it does, BUY IT!

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow so we'll see! It's at a price where I could resell without losing a dime if I don't jive with it. I wish it was 4" shorter and 10 less liters, but we'll see how she goes!
