GoPro paddle mount
« on: August 04, 2012, 05:39:10 AM »
Question on using GoPro mounted to the paddle....

Does it make the paddle sink?  Using the GoPro handlebar mount kit.  Don't want to use the floaty back since I want to be able to swing the camera back to the paddle shaft to hold up to film.

I don't know about the paddle mount, but the camera will sink on its own without the floatie back. I dove for my nephew's brand new GoPro for a couple of hours after it came off while he was wake boarding.

That I do know.  Just wondering if attached to a paddle (carbon) whether it will make it noticeabley less buoyant or not.

I use a few feet of good PVC electrical tape to fix the gopro in the standard mount to the paddle, and I've used it on several different carbon paddles like this and none sank.

it's also bit lighter than using the handlebar mounting method, and still pretty strong.
*(I don't have the handlebar mount, but can't imagine it weighs too much more)

Use the seat post mount, and my paddle still floats just fine.

For this vid I cut the white plastic GoPro stick on surf mount into a v (piece of pie shape) and duct taped it to my paddle blade where the blade meets the shaft.. and had a small leash from the camera around the shaft in case it popped off.. It seemed to work well and gave me a bit more distance away from me than if it was just on the shaft.

They float fine, but I'd use the float back. No sense losing a camera. Stuff breaks.

DJ, you don't think having on the blade itself is going to effect paddling that much?

Yes it does hamper paddling for sure.. (when the camera's on).. I took it on today's down-winder and didn't end up using it because I needed those one or two stroke take off's which we didn't get.. I planed to just pop it on once the conditions got good.. Paddling with the mount on the blade didn't effect paddling much.. It works fine for suring when you can just take a couple of strokes to catch a wave.

What did you use to adhere the custom fitting to the paddle blade? I'm gonna start rockin' a GP paddle mount and am gonna start w/a handlebar mount and take it from there. I was just in Costa Rica and had a paddle w/handlebar mount but it was WAY too close to handle.

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

I just duct tape my mounts to my paddle.
