Probably not paddling that caused it.. Paddling just brought it to the surface. If it didn't happen paddling that day, then it would have probably happened the next day because of a sneeze or something silly lik that!

My back was awful, but I switched out 4 hours/day of MMORPGs for 4/hours a day of SUP and I'm all better! :D Sitting is soooooOOOO bad for your back.

Besides the complications of cracking L1 & L2 in a boating accident..I've always struggled w/ back pain and stiffness.  It's no different w/ SUP.. struggling w/ stiffness on long paddles and tweaking/wrenching when playing in surf or doing any aggressive balance training stuff..  What helped me most was learning to narrow my stance and relax on long paddles.. and otherwise learning to go with falls better (relax)/not fighting the moment..

In the meantime, I'm addicted to rolling.. vid (below) is my favorite self therapy.. If you don't have access to (2) TRX.. you can figure lots of ways to suspend legs and use any sort of rings or other suspension training devices.. Regardless, it's easier, more relaxing and fun to roll while suspended..IMO.  enjoy!

SUPinside, that makes my back feel better just watching the vid  :D
Thanks for posting - I'm going to rig up something like that and give it a try.
My favourite self therapy device is the inversion swing, it works way better than an inversion table for me (I've tried both) - here it is:  http://www.evolutionhealth.com/inversion_swing/inversion-swing.html

Thanks.. I get a lot of relief out of that move and gym friends are jumping on board..
I'm liking the idea of that inversion swing as well.. thanks.  At 6'+ 200lb.s.. do you think I will I feel safe and have enough room in standard doorway?

I've always hooked my inversion swing to some secure fixings in the ceiling (to a joist) these fixings are about 7'6" from the floor, also I ran an extra webbing strap through the whole thing for reassurance, never tried the doorway set up.

Thanks Jim.. I haven't gotten inversion swing yet, but just thinking about suspension, stretching and traction/decompression... has me trying some new stuff - modified inversion therapy and stretching on fitness balls.. My back is thanking me (especially when combined w/ rolling techniques)

that looks awesome SUPinside-
I love me some foam rolling-graduated recently to the harder rolls not the entry level soft foam-it is fantastic!

That looks medieval but it also looks like it works.

Surfing combined with an old construction injury did me in-switched to SUP and i can go 4-5 hours and as long as i do a few downward dogs and stretch pre and post i am good.

FOam rolling has been a revelation and a life-saver-and losing some gut...

agree SoCalSupper.. rolling can be a revelation.. I like my home roller - solid pvc type wrapped in firm foam grid (tptherapy.com - pricey for roller imo, but lucky my son gifted me).  I use this in a general area then follow up w/ rolling a lacrosse ball or tennis ball around specific points.
