"River" effect during big races
« on: July 02, 2012, 08:33:31 AM »
Curious about how much effect the the "river" created by a large group of paddlers has on speed. Not talking about drafting, but the track made through the water that 90% of paddlers take in race. The water is pulled along creating its own current. Even a quarter mile back from the unlimited boards you can feel it pulling you forward if there a 50+ paddlers in a race. Did an open ocean 15 mile race this weekend and stayed outside of the "track" by at least 1/2 mile. I could see the whole pack moving together against wind and current. Wondering what people think the speed difference is? Half of a mile an hour? More?

It definitely there. though the chop and wanky wave effect probably cancels it out. I try to get out of it and paddle in smooth water.

I agree with Bill . The massive chop and wash takes away any advantage . go for the smooth water of to the side at the start. Keep an eye on any trains forming and be ready to hop aboard.

On the other hand, don't discount local knowledge, there are all kinds of currents that can make a HUGE difference to a 5 MPH craft. The pack might be following the guy who knows where the magic current is. I've been in situations where I thought the "pack" was doing something dumb and went off on my own, only to find myself moving quickly rearwards in the order.
