pismo beach advice

hi,

I am thinking of booking either Kon Tiki, right in Pismo Beach in front of the pier, or Dolphin Bay Resort, 5 km north at the shell beach.

Can you guys let me know how the beaches compare in terms of waves, crowds, and tolerance towards us, SUPers?

Also I just bought a handplane, never done it, how are those two beaches with that regard?

I am a little tired of 5 months of skiing, a week of surfing should heal my body.... and then one more month of skiing. Both hotels are right on the beach and have great reviews, but nothing beats local knowledge. Ill take my ULI fatass quad 9'3"...

+1. Havent surfed the area much, but better exposure at Pismo.

  Pismo Beach is more consistent than Shell beach. Kon Tiki has Pismo Beach (all sand beach break) right out in front and stairs to get down to the beach.  Shell beach is all reefs and harder to get to the surf.  Pismo breaks much better at higher tides but can break at any tide sometimes.  Bring a good 4/3 wet suit and booties..maybe a hood if you fall in a lot.  Traditionally Spring winds pull up cold water from the Pacific (upwelling) and late spring early summer water can be colder than winter in the low 50's.

  It can get crowded but tolerance of sup is good.  Best to stay away from the Pismo Pier.  That hand plan thing would work good at Pismo but you will need good fins to catch the sometimes mushy waves.

  That Fat ass Uli will be perfect for Pismo at high tide.  The wave is mushy but you can get plenty of turns in before it even breaks.  I would go for the Kon Tiki.  You should have a great time!

with regards to the trip, I had two options - Central CA and Mexico. I looked on the weather, and looked on the price tag. Although I been to Mexico twice and never been in Central CA... 15 degrees Celcius and couple grand in the price difference tipped  it off towards Mexico...

But thank you once again, your information is very useful, I just will come another time, probably in June or in September, beginning October may be...
