How 'bout a Hot Chick on a Stand Up Elevator Rail?   :P
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Yes, South Bird, but also Hairmo's, sewer line and Hanimans which were around the corner from the point. Lose your board at all of those spots and it was a mess! The point would get really good sometimes but the tension from the localism was intense and took most of the fun away so on the really crowded days we started to surf Hanimans and Sewer Line. I remember feeling a sense of wonder while paddling out at Hanimans for the first time. No one surfed there then and it was big that day and felt spooky. Sadly, those "secret spots" got discovered by the masses when they connected the street in front but we had them  to ourselves for a few years. Good times. Did you ever surf Hanimans and Sewer Line? (Sewer Line was the left on the south end of the dirt lot and Hanimans was at the north end of the lot and south of South Bird.)

Here's an interesting thing...  A few years ago on a big stormy winter day I saw three guys surfing a gnarly left that was inside of North Bird. (Way inside on the south side of the cove there.) That wave had an almost impossible take off because it would dump over a super shallow slab reef. It wasn't a pretty wave like Big Rock but it was gnarly and these kids knew how to surf it. The strange thing is that after all of those years of poking around those reefs I had never seen that spot break before.

My wife paddling out at Tourmaline March 2012 on her 7'8

I grew up surfing PB Point and the cove which is just north of Tourmo as well as the reefs north of the point. Do you miss the waves in southern california?
Likewise, when we were surfing PB Pt. we could park on Archer St. (mid 60's), that was before they painted all the curbs red, bastards.  And the point was called "Archer St.", we'd access the water from that little empty lot, climb down the short cliff, and wade across the rocks with our boards upside down not to damage the fins, until it was deep enough to flip them over and paddle out.  Good times.
The reefs north of there, you mean like South Bird, and then North Bird, past Bird Rock?
Used to surf South Bird a bunch, but that was just before leashes, and it would get expensive, but I learned how to fix dings, just getting out of the water was a pain.  North Bird was more forgiving, a big peak during a south swell, a beautiful wave but short, the drop was everything.  Then leashes came out an I had some more fun at South Bird but not much, that's about the time I moved away to S.L.O. county.  But that whole area, all the way up past Windansea was my stomping grounds, very fond memories.

Nope, when I lived down there nobody was surfing anything between PB Point and south Bird, leashes changed all that later on.
The wave at south Bird was go good, that we were always willing to risk our boards to surf it.  If you lost your board, you were guaranteed dings on the rocks, and maybe thrashed knuckles and toes just getting your board off the rocks.  We got pretty good at body wrapping our boards during a wipe out.
It takes a quiver to do that.
