I'm a guy so it probably doesn't matter what I think but when I use the word chick -- not real often but occasionally -- I'm not intending anything derogatory at all...usually it's in admiration, and not just how she looks but more so what it looks like she does, as in being fit, active, competent, hardcore...

At a race recently I was called out by a guy because I made the comment "Man, she's burley."  I said it with total compliment in mind.  He thought I was crazy to think a woman would feel complimented by that.  He's probably right.  But if I said it and she said "Thanks for the compliment"....whoo boy!
Yeah, burley might be asking for the wrong reaction, ripped, cut, muscular might be better choices.  But it all depends on who says it, how it is said and the context.  People are so complex (even men, but especially women).  I might well qualify to you as burley, and if I heard someone I did not know say it in a crowd, I would take offense.  If that same stranger were to talk to me personally, clearly appreciating the work it takes to maintain my musculature, then I would think it that it was just a clumsy compliment.

Chick is the same way, if you are not perceived as using it to objectify or condescend you can usually get away with it. Don't forget, sometimes taking offense is a request for validation.  I was just teasing him about calling his wife a chick.

And for the record, this thread and you guys are by far the most respectful in this type of thread I have found on the web (yeah that was a poorly constructed sentence),  creativity and humor go a long way.  they tend to get really derogatory on the guitar boards.

I am very good at clumsy compliments.  Quite skilled at most anything clumsy.  I handle clumsy with finesse, in fact.

Only twice?
It takes a quiver to do that.

I got a laugh at this method of dealing with guitar players.

Sorry no paddle boards.

Yes, I have always enjoyed that one.  What do you call a guitarist without a girlfriend? homeless.  Don.t get me started on drummers or bass players

Ok.... here's a picture of a participant in Saturdays Cape Cod Bay Challenge, taking a well deserved rest. Her stoke was better than most at the end of this 12 hour day.

This years 33 mile event was called brutal by many, due to the stiff headwinds and confused seas faced during the last 14 miles.

Another real SUP girl for this thread.
