5 Hours in San Diego - Where to rent & surf?
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:08:46 PM »
Headed to San Diego this weekend for Brody Welte's WPA Paddle Fitness course. I'll have a few hours Friday after arriving to hopefully surf. Curious where I can rent a board close to or on a beach and pop out for a bit without having to cartop with my rental car?

Thanks in advance..

Try Bob at West Coast Paddle Sports (this is the same Bob who used to own Bob's Mission Surf).  He isn't on the beach but he'll be able to point you in the right direction...

If you're looking to rent a surfboard, try Mission Beach Surf at 4320 Mission Blvd., you can walk to the water from the shop. www.missionsurf.com ,ask for Rich, he bought the shop from Bob at West Coast Paddle Sports. Have fun!

If you want to 'laydown' surf, almost every beach town (Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Cardiff, etc) has surf shops near the water that will rent you a board.  The only SUP shop I know of that is on the water is Fastlane Hobie center, on Mission Bay. You can flat water paddle right from his shop, but not surf.

Bob Long is the owner. Was at the shop the other day. Has a handful of boards available to rent, I think it was $35 for the day.

The Details

The common basilisk lizard seems to walk on water by rapidly pumping its hind legs, but with today's deal, you don't need super-speedy limbs to skim across the surface. Glide on over to Surfari and grab a stand-up paddleboard for a 24-hour rental for $20 (regularly $50).

Learning to operate a stand-up paddleboard is a simple, intuitive activity, and enthusiasts rave about the full-body workout, which can strengthen your arms and tighten your core. At Surfari, the helpful and knowledgeable staff will show you the basics till you're prepared to brave the waves at Mission Beach, an area that provides challenging surf for the reptilian naturals and calmer waters for more tentative creatures. So graze over any misgivings about what certain lizards can do effortlessly, and hop, skip, and jump across the water to today's deal.
