SUP Bag Maintenance
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:15:15 PM »
To ensure a longer lasting board bag, spray WD-40 on your entire zipper once or twice a year and definitely do this if you're going to store you bag for a while. This will help prevent the salt water from freezing up your zipper heads.

That works sort of, but there's better stuff at any dive shop. Zippers are the bane of diving.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

After decades of windsurfing in Baja where salt air, salt water, and dust destroy zippers and other things like mast bases and boom extensions, I've found the best and cheapest insurance is a bar of bath soap. Just rub it on the zipper teeth, or anything that needs to slide and no more problems. WD40 and other sprays get oily and can attract dirt.

If a zipper gets stuck (because you didn't use soap), soak it in salt water. Yes, soaking in salt water will free it, this also works for pliers and dykes for for fishing.

Best thing I have found for seized zips is vinegar. Don't be tempted to yank it just soak with vinegar and it's frees up pretty much instantly.

I'm with Bill, stay away from the oily, petroleum based stuff.  I like McLube spray from the boating industry. In a pinch, a little chapstick will get you going again too.
