I have 2 hand glassed PSH... both have been heavily ridden and so far not any repairs... Plenty of chips in the clear coat on the glossy finish, none on the polished one. I'm not that big so maybe thats a factor in rail dings with the paddle but for sure I've wacked them pretty good with no damage. One's about a year old, the other 6 months.

With my hand glassed (China glassed PSH), I can flex the deck by pushing with my thumb. I could almost crack it just pushing with my thumb. Just like a hand glassed shortboard. Very thin glassing and soft EPS blank. Great for shortboards, but not so good for durability in large ones.

If the SD boards have denser blanks, and or more glassing, or whatever is making them tougher, that is great news.

I think I read somewhere my board was 1.5 lb. EPS.

I know some guys use 2.0 lb or higher, but then those other brands are sometimes very heavy in hand glassed construction.

I will say repairs are easy and the blank doesn't suck water, so its good EPS. I've been paddling and seen cracks though to the EPS and kept surfing. Had no choice because I had 2 more miles to paddle home that day.

DW,
Most hand glassed boards ARE somewhat fragile.   Not sure if yours is MORE than others but it sounds like it.    Board is 1.5# foam.    Glassing is 2-6oz bottom and 2-6oz top with patch.    Without having the board to see I can't make a true call on it...   What I am willing to do is give you a really good price on your next board.    Send us an e-mail addressed to me and we can talk about it...   paddlesurfhawaii@yahoo.com

We got some absolutely sick boards coming that will be perfect for your size AND they are MOLDED!

Here's what we been up to lately....  We got off  the island of Oahu to surf this place.    Want to say a special thanks to the locals who let us surf here at this spot.    Thanks also to Allen Mozo who shot pics instead of surfing....

Austin on a 10' custom at a remote reef...

Johnston on a 9-6 molded board

Don on a nice little grinder... Extra long up-coast paddle to get there, 1/2 mile out, lots of creatures, very very fickle, heavy local crew.   Other than that, a nice place.

Kinda strange me just standing there in the background!

Curtis.

Fully layed out off the bottom with eyes focused on where he is gonna blast...

Here I am in the second phase of a pump for speed.    Starts as a crouch then full extension to project down the line.    Riding the 10-6 molded again...    Love those high speed arcs...

Stewart Ferriman on the 9-3 Ripper...

Aloha,
Blane

Great pics Blane. I love the one of you standing there looking on....looking very casual, could be reading the paper with a cup of coffee waiting for a bus or something, just a regular morning commute... ;D

I found Blane. He was pulling into a barrel testing out a new surf vest for when North Shore gets big again. Thanks for the tips. My 10-6 rips.

Nice pics! On one hand, I feel better. On the other... Why do I torture myself like this? (you should see the crap we have to ride) Thanks for the vis/fix, Blane.

Hee hee!     I used to ride dirt bikes A LOT and my nickname in the motorcycle community here in Hawaii is TORTURE CHAMBERS.   I won't go into detail but it had to do with my love for the extreme and my willingness to bring others with me... ;)

Blaine,
THIS MAY SOUND A LITTE "GAY".....

Next time can you please take me to your "TORTURE CHAMBER" and "TORTURE ME". I'll bring my own "paddle" and you can watch me get a spank'in. I'll be "willing and able" to endor anything you dish out.  :o

Just call me "ANYTIME"......PLEASE...... ;)

SAM......... :)
