Looks interesting and kind of funny.  My wife would tease me mercilessly.

Your wife would have good reason. Last surgery I had they hooked me up to something like that (only not orange). Didn't seem like it did much, but who knows. Impressive development effort, that's a very slick package.

those are essentially sequential compression devices. we use those in the hospital routinely for bedridden patients to prevent venous stasis which can lead to clot formation/emboli formation. Looks like a gimmick to me and incredibly unnecessary. A much cheaper way if you are set on these would be to get yourself a pair of ted hose. waaaay cheaper and practical than the compression 'massagers'.

let me clarify, when you are in the hospital and bedridden, and over the age of 14 (i guess the peer-reviewed literature shows these to be effective in patients 14 and up, and not necessary in younger pediatric patients) these are essential, but are a gimmick in the application that this company is intending them for.

the whole point of these devices, like i mentioned earlier is to prevent venous stasis. this is accomplished by inflating and deflating, mimicking the contraction of the muscles on the legs, which keeps the blood moving. when blood stops moving it congeals and forms clots. good clots can then break off and get lodged in the heart (myocardial infarction aka: heart attack) or lodged int he brain (i.e: stroke) or in the lungs (pulmonary embolus) or in a another part of the body impairing circulation (DVT: deep vein thrombosis). if you standing up and or paddling on a board you are contracting these muscles.

haha! thanks. I am FAR from being a physician but appreciate the kind words. In the real world I play a pediatric intensive care nurse, and before that worked in the adult world doing the same and also in the emergency department. believe it or not, i have actually seen what NOT wearing these devices can lead to in a hospital setting with a patient that can't move, but in this situationI agree, your money would be much better spent on a new paddle!
